William Frishe Dean, Jr.

Born into an Army family in Salt Lake City in 1930, William Frishe Dean, Jr., led a life of integrity and service that took him around the world from Asia to South America and various bases in the US, and eventually San Antonio, where he fell in love and married Nancy Ellen Williamson. After attending the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, ’54), Bill was commissioned in the USAF and flew for his country for over 20 years. As a Forward Air Controller, he flew combat missions in Vietnam. Bill loved sports, especially tennis, which he took up when he moved after retirement to San Antonio. He was a favorite partner in many weekly games with friends who came to admire him for his sportsmanship, kindness, and enthusiasm. He owned a number of small business after retiring, but his first love was his family and watching his children grow up in this community that he adopted as his own. In his later years, he spent his free time watching various sports – both live and on TV. Bill was always willing to volunteer at local tennis tournaments and help others. Quick with a compliment or dry joke, he was humble and gentlemanly. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William F. Dean, Sr., and Mildred Dern Dean, and his sister, June Dean Williams. Bill is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Ellen, son, John David (Kathleen), daughter, Ellen Cotton (Robert), and son, Robert Andrew “Bobby” (Jennifer), as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 5 nieces and nephews. A family memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
