PORTIEK

Nicolaas (Nick) Gerrit Portiek, 74, of Hoadley, Alberta passed on January 21, 2021, surrounded by his family.

Nick was born in Heeg, Friesland, the Netherlands to Gerben and Anna Portiek, on May 24, 1946. Nick emigrated from Holland in 1968 after marrying his beautiful wife, Femia Veronica Portiek nee van den Berg. After pursuing several opportunities in Canada, in 1974 Nick and Veronica settled in Hoadley on Istawapta Farms to fulfil his dream of being a dairy farmer and to raise their family.  In 1985, Nick began working at the Rimbey Feed-Rite, where he worked his way up to manager, and retired as the Alberta Beef Nutritionist after 19 years. In 2004, with the purchase of a small sawmill, he began building cabins and other buildings which became his passion and his business, Creative Cabins.

Nick‘s passing leaves behind his cherished wife Veronica and five daughters, Olivia (Trevor), Anita (Tom), Margo, Cindy (Shawn), and Shelley (Darren), as well as twelve beautiful grandchildren, Kelsey, Megan, Sarah, Haley, Nick, Colton, Chase, Reid, Denver, Trey, Ava, and Courtney. He is also survived by his siblings, Hank, Riek, Lucie, and Nel, as well as a huge extended family. Nick was predeceased by his parents and his brother Johan.

A celebration of Nick’s life will be planned at a future date when he can properly be remembered by his family and friends.
