Dr. Joseph Thomas Bones Obituary

BONES, Dr. Joseph Thomas, 87, of Bon Air, Va., passed away on January 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph White Bones and Evelyn Urquhart Bones of Pulaski, Va. He is survived by his wife, Betty Harris Bones; and his children, Courtney Shultz (Anthony), Leslie Maclay (Jeffrey), Bruce Bones (Susan) and Blair Bones. He also leaves behind his six grandchildren, Meredith Sloop (Jacob), Laura Shultz, Peyton Maclay, Spencer Maclay, Caroline Bones and Harrison Bones. Raised in Pulaski, Va., he attended Pulaski High School and graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1954, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in 1958, followed by a two-year residency in pediatrics at MCV. He practiced pediatrics in Richmond with Dr. Lawrence Kendig and Dr. Gayle Arnold until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1967. He served two years at Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Okla., having achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Upon his discharge, he joined the practice of Dr. Henry Dwyer and Dr. Antony Austin in Richmond. The practice opened a branch in Midlothian, Va., which eventually became known as Chesterfield Pediatrics. Dr. Bones subsequently partnered with Dr. Arlene Harrington, who owns the practice to this day. For many years, Dr. Bones was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served on the vestry. He and Betty hosted The Huguenot House Christian Fellowship at their home in the seventies. He and Betty enjoyed their retirement at their home at Lake Gaston with their golden retrievers. Dr. Bones enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, watching the Washington Football Team (formerly The Redskins), the lake, his dogs and entertaining his pediatric patients with a wide range of cartoon characters he drew on tongue depressors. No services are planned at this time. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a more appropriate time.
