William Check Obituary

Born in Nesquehoning, PA, December 15, 1922, he was the son of Martin and Anna Bajzik Check.  He is survived by his wife, Audrey Ruble Check, with whom he celebrated 71 wonderful years together on June 25, 2020.   In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. William A. Check, his wife, Sheryl, and grandson, Adam, of Great Falls, VA, and Brian D. Check, of Schwenksville, PA, along with a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son Robert B. Check, sisters Elizabeth Check, Anna Check Yamarik, and Mildred Check, and daughter-in-law Ann Rose Check.

He was a graduate of West Chester University and later received two master’s degrees, in music and counseling.

Early in life, he played the clarinet and saxophone for several Big Band groups.

After college, he began his teaching career at Line Mountain School District in Northumberland County where he started their first high school band.  Bill and Audrey then moved to Mifflin County, where he became well known as Band Director for Chief Logan High School from 1954-1963.  While he never lost his love for music, his genuine interest in his student’s education and future led him to become a Guidance Counselor at Chief Logan, a position he held for over two decades.  While he was a true Mingo, he was also a huge fan of Penn State, attending many concerts, plays and rarely missing a home football game.

Bill was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lewistown, where he sang for many years in the Chancel Choir and was a former member and president of the church council. He was a board member of the Mifflin County Historical Society and a member of Lewistown Lions Club for 44 years.

A private burial will be held with his immediate family.  A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in William’s memory may be made to the St. John’s music program at 120 N. Main Street, Lewistown, PA 17044 or to the high school scholarship fund by retired teachers, Mifflin County School Retirees Scholarship Fund, 131 Kearns Road, Lewistown, PA 17044.
