Georgiana T. Thoman Obituary

Brighton

Peacefully at home January 21, 2021 at the age of 91.

Georgiana, known as “Tay”, was predeceased by parents, George H. Taylor and Frances Dunn Taylor; sister, Lillian Taylor Hubbard; and husband, John W. Thoman. She is survived by her children, John W. (Lee Venolia) Thoman Jr. of Williamstown, MA and Margaret Thoman (Jay) Rachfal of Brighton; grandchildren, Riley Venolia Thoman, Trisha Rachfal, Celeste Thoman Venolia, and Emily Taylor Rachfal; niece, Francie (Larry) Schenck; nephews, Tom (Peggy) Hubbard and George (Janice) Hubbard; and four generations of loving relatives.

Born and raised in Rochester, Tay enjoyed small classes in elementary and middle school at The Columbia School, graduated from The Masters School at Dobbs Ferry and Garland Junior College. She married John Thoman in 1956 and they enjoyed over 60 years of loving marriage together. Early childhood education was a life-long interest. She was an avid elementary school and PTA volunteer, Hillside Children’s Center Board Member, and cared deeply about the raising of her children. Family members, especially her grandchildren, were a priority, but she was also a close and true friend to many. She was a great listener who cared deeply about people (and small white dogs). Hosting her children’s friends for summer vacations, she became like a second mother to several.

She loved to play the clown, and make people laugh when they were sad or anxious, but Tay was also proud to play the role of Queen Elizabeth (whom she loved) and wave to her admirers. Among her passions were reading, bird watching, flowers, and flower arranging. But people were most important to Tay. She was actively engaged in the community, especially at Third Presbyterian Church.

Tay’s family extends the greatest of thanks to all her loving caregivers led by Sue, her doctors, and a compassionate hospice team.

The family held a small private burial service. When it is safe to do so, there will be a larger celebration of Tay’s life -- she would want everyone to gather, and to find comfort and joy in each other. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in memory of Tay to Third Presbyterian Church, 4 Meigs St. Rochester, NY 14607 or to Hillside Children’s Foundation, 1183 Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY 14620.
