Tuula Salmela Sudbury, Ontario Obituary

Tuula Salmela

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tuula Salmela (nee Paajanen) peacefully, with grace and dignity, at her home in Wanup, Ontario, on January 20th, 2021. She is survived by her husband, Matti Salmela. Beloved sister of Tapio Paajanen (Monique) and Jouni Paajanen (Debi). Daughter of the late Kalervo and Aune Paajanen. Also predeceased by brothers Markku and Tuomo. Loving sister in-law to Leila. Special aunt to Kurt, Ericka, Ashley, Laura, Sarah, Kris and great aunt to Kiera, Emma, Victor, Jones, Lexi and Penelope. Tuula leaves behind many cousins and friends in Finland and Sweden. A retired teacher, Tuula spent her career inspiring young minds at Wanup Public School. In the summers, she was a staple on the Killarney waterfront. She spent many summers at the marina and at the cottage on George Island. An adventurous, optimistic spirit, Tuula lived life to the fullest with her partner Matti. They once crossed the Atlantic Ocean in their trusty sailboat, the Moonshine. She also loved the outdoors. When home on the farm, Tuula could often be found skiing or walking the fields on her property with her best companions Jake and Pete. Always fascinated when she spotted a different bird or animal, she truly appreciated the beauty that surrounded her. She was an avid reader and a great baker, and would happily share her pulla and treats with those who dropped in for a visit. We will keep her fondly in our memories and will miss her dearly. At Tuula’s request, there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, the family is accepting donations to the Killarney Health Centre. The family wishes to thank Dr. Bill McMullen and nurse Darlene Kidd, of the Killarney Health Centre, for the excellent care and attention they provided.
