Steve Nelson Kovacs Obituary

The family of Steve Kovacs of Preeceville, husband of the Late Elsie Kovacs, sadly announce his passing on January 20, 2021. He was ninety-four years of age. 

     Steve Nelson Kovacs was born on November 21, 1926 in the Touchwood Hills District of Saskatchewan to Steve and Elizabeth (nee Veresh) Kovacs. After completing grade seven in 1940, Steve worked at various jobs.  In 1948 he went to school in Edmonton and took Auto and Diesel Training.  After his course, he worked for Graham Construction of Estevan as a track-hoe operator.  In 1957 Steve took a job operating a Cat D7 for the R.M. of Preeceville for 3 years. He then became foreman for the remaining 31 years, retiring in 1991.  Steve has been an active member of St. Patrick’s Church Treasury for 8 years, with one year as coordinator for District 23…and four years on Club 60 council with three of those years serving as president.  Steve was also on the Board of Directors for the East Central Seniors, on the Steering Committee for the Western Development Museum in Yorkton.  He was also a Director for the Crystal Lake Development Corporation.  In his spare time, Steve supplied music for old-time and pattern dances and is an ardent dancer.  Steve’s wife, Elsie, passed away in 1984 at the age of 49 years. Steve was predeceased by his brother, Ernie Kovacs and his sister Goldina Kovacs. Steve is survived by his three children; daughter, Sherlyn (Lance) Roste from Margo and their children Chris and Darryl; son, Richard (Beverly nee Nokinsky) from Calgary and their children Carla and Chastin; son, Nelson (Jackie Haley) from Calgary; brother, Fred (Hilda) Kovacs; sister, Anne Brown; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

     Funeral Services were held on Monday, January 25, 2021 from St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Sturgis with Rev. Father Andrew Sowa O.M.I. officiating. Interment followed in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Parish Cemetery with Mark Jakubowski, Brian Jakubowski, James Bodnar, Darryl Roste, Chris Roste, and Jorge Sosa serving as casket bearers. Memorials in memory of Steve may be made to St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church or to the Parish Cemetery Fund as gifts of remembrance.
