Mahalon T. Mears Obituary

Mahalon Turnage Mears of Smyrna, Delaware, lovingly known as “Dee Dee”, was born on Saturday, December 24, 1927, to the late Fred and Anna Louise Bunn-Mears in Quinby, Virginia. He entered into eternal rest with our heavenly FATHER on Thursday, January 21, 2021, at the age of 93, while at Bayhealth Hospital, Dover, Delaware. Mahalon was educated in the public schools in Accomack County, Virginia and at a young age he attended St. John Independent Church in Messongo,Virginia. Dee Dee moved to Delaware, at an early age, and began working in construction. He later joined, Local Union 199 in Wilmington, Delaware in the early fifties and continued his passion for masonry. He later retired, after 30+ years. When given almost any tool, Dee would master it and could build anything that he set out and desired to do. He would frequently help friends and family with projects that they may have at their homes. He would often speak about the many jobs that he had worked on around Delaware and other places. There wouldn’t be a time, if you knew him, that he wouldn’t reminisce about his jobs, no matter if you happened to be riding in the car with him or simply stopping by his home. Mahalon met the late Jerrye E. Mears in 1949. They were joined in holy matrimony in 1951. From this union, they had two children, Mahalon L. Mears and Vesteria O. Mears-Wilson. In addition to his parents, Mahalon was preceded in death by his wife, Jerrye E. Mears; brothers, Homer LeCato, Wilmer Mears, Harley Mears and Henry Mears; and sisters, Anna Jackson, Sarah Baldwin, Gertrude Taylor and Eleanor Mears. Dee leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Mahalon L. Mears (Penny) (Smyrna, DE) and daughters, Vesteria O. Mears-Wilson (Dwayne) (Dover, DE), Debbie Toppin (Russell) (Smyrna, DE) and Delphaine Reed (Dover, DE); five grandchildren, (Mahalon L. Gassaway, (Dover, DE) DeVontae’ E. Wilson (Fort Bragg, NC), Arielle Wilson (Dover DE), Darin Williams (Elgin, SC) and David Williams (Middleburg, FL); four nephews; Douglas Selby, Keith Harden, Maurice Taylor and Malcolm Jones; one niece, Vashti Harden; A VERY close cousin, just like his brother, Sherman Jackson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
