Calvin L. Birt Obituary

Calvin Leon Birt, son of the late Catherine Carlos Boone, and Ulysses Birt, was born on November 1, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York.  He attended New York City Public Schools and was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School Class of 1971. He worked for many years at the New York City Department of Finance, and later retired from the same.  After retirement he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia.

He was united in holy matrimony to Michelle G. Birt, on June 10, 1983.  This union was blessed with their only child Melika Ashanna Birt.  The love between the two of them was immeasurable and the true essence of until death do us part, as he was preceded in death by his wife on January 10, 2021.

Calvin was an active member of the Antioch AME Church in Stone Mountain, GA. Even as his health declined, he continued to stream their services online, and pray with his pastor whenever possible. He enjoyed playing chess and bid whist.  To know him was to love him; his sharp tongue would sting at times or make you laugh, and he remained this way until the very end. His family is now left with a void because he was the unofficial family photographer, he never went anywhere without his camera.

He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Michelle G. Birt; his mother, Catherine Carlos Boone; his father, Ulysses Birt; and his aunts, Doris “Marva” Seymore, Viola “Shirley” Tisdale, and Mary Stradford.

His life will forever be cherished in the lives of his loving daughter Melika Birt of Chester, VA; his sisters, Joanne Birt, Cynthia Mason, and Danine Green; brothers, Mark Birt and Jamell Birt; five grandchildren, Malik, Shomari “Mari”, Tahirah “Lady T”, Nailah “Nunu”, and Anika “Ms. Busy”; three great-grandchildren, Taylin, Markabella “Bella, and Kashezz “Kash”; a host of in-laws, devoted nieces, nephews, cousins including devoted friends, Leon Jefferson, Louis, and Gerald.

A viewing will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2021 at Wilson & Associates Funeral Service - East Chapel, 5008 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2021.
