Robert Cleveland Duncan Saltville, Virginia Obituary

Robert Cleveland Duncan

Plasterco, VA Robert Cleveland Duncan, age 83, may be risen, but he is still among us. How fitting that he passed on January 20, 2021, inauguration day, as he did love politics. He was born to the late Nelda Roberts Duncan and Lawrence B. Duncan on October 14, 1937. Robert was also preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Duncan Willis; and son-in-law, Jim Mayden. He will be missed by all those who had the honor of knowing him. He is survived by his wife; Anne Davidson (61 years), children; Stacy, Kelley, Kip, Trey (shared son), grandson; (David), brother; Jack (Betty), sister; Robin Garnand (John), and friends too numerous to list. Also, his cats, they are going to miss him. He was an Army veteran (82nd Airborne) committed to his country. Robert loved and cared for his family always addressing their needs ahead of his own. Known as a man of the people, Robert was a true community activist in both Smyth and Washington Counties. Examples include his service on the Washington County Virginia Board of Supervisors, the Washington County Industrial Development Authority, and as private advisor to local dignitaries (just coffee club he would say). As sole proprietor of his business for 50 years, Robert impacted the lives of all those who stopped in. To him, it was never just a customer but always a people encounter. If you needed to be greeted with a smile, Duncan’s was the place to go and Robert was the one to see. Based on his outstanding business skill, Robert was granted an honorary business degree from Emory & Henry College. Robert had an unselfish nature that is best reflected by the countless recipients of his generosity. He was a mason and member of William King Lodge No. 227 for greater than 50 years. It can best be said of Robert that he was a quiet man of faith, a legend that leaves a legacy. Due to current COVID-19 concerns, a single committal service will be held on January 23, 2021 at 12:30 pm at the Mount Rose Cemetery with Pastor Lisa Bryant officiating. Donations to honor Robert may be directed to the Madam Russell United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be expressed at drhendersonfuneralhome.com. The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Robert Cleveland Duncan Family.
