Joan Lillian Pirie Obituary

PIRIE, Joan Lillian (nee Tonkin) May 29, 1931 – January 21, 2021 After living a wonderful life of 90 years, Joan passed away peacefully at home on her own terms with her family by her side. Life is a Tapestry of many people, experiences, events and memories, and during Joan’s 90 years she wove a beautiful tapestry living in the best country, Canada, and at the best time. Joan was and felt adored by her 5 children, Morgan (Mary), Chris, Lynne, Greg and Heather. She was a devoted and much loved Grandma to 11 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Missed by her brother Bruce (Sandy) and predeceased by her loving sister, Marie (2016). Auntie Joan will also be missed by many nieces and nephews. Joan was married for 37 mostly happy years to Bud (deceased 1994) until they parted in 1989. Joan was a fantastic friend to many as she possessed a generosity of spirit where she welcomed everyone with her entertaining, talkative, fun, and engaging personality along with her wonderful sense of humour. Joan’s “piece of Heaven on Earth” was her cottage in Fenelon Falls, which was not only a very special place for her, but also for her family and friends. Joan enjoyed many wonderful travels both abroad and throughout Canada. Being in Montreal at the Opening Ceremony of the 1976 Summer Olympics and experiencing first hand the Canadian Olympic Team walking into the stadium was an extremely memorable and moving experience for her. Joan was a competitive bridge player and was proud to achieve the high level status of “Silver Life Master”. She was a long time member at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club. Joan loved animals, parties, reading, crossword puzzles and was an avid swimmer. Joan will be deeply missed but for those fortunate enough to have her in their lives, she will never be forgotten. Cremation has taken place. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In memory of Joan, donations to Ian Anderson House (www.ianandersonhouse.com) or MAiDHouse (www.maidhouse.ca) would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Skinner & Middlebrook Funeral Home.
