Truly G. Rollins, Jr. Washington, Washington DC Obituary

Truly G. Rollins, Jr.

“Therefore, my beloved brethren be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 COR 15:58

Trustee Truly George Rollins, Jr., after a visit with his son, wife, and grandchildren, slept peacefully away into the arms of his savior and Lord on January 9, 2021.

He was born on November 23, 1931 in Chicago, Il, to Elizabeth Johnson Rollins and Truly G. Rollins, Sr. He was the eldest of seven children. His parents moved to DC in 1940 when he was nine and he attended middle, and high school here.

Truly had a passionate love of the outdoors. As a youngster his mom told of the many times he came home with buckets of berries for her to make pies. He talked his dad into letting him have a .22 caliber rifle, which he and his lifelong childhood friend “Bado” would use to go target shooting. Truly entered the US Navy during the Korean War and served his term honorably on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Tarawa.

Truly met and married the love of his life Inez, on a blind date in DC. They were together sixty-one and a half years and had three sons. He had a real love for family, travel, and outdoor activities. After the service Truly worked many decades for the US Postal Service as a letter carrier and did not retire until his seventies. He always said walking outside in all kinds of weather, suited him. Hunting, hiking, and camping up and down the East coast with his family made him happiest.

Truly accepted Jesus as his savior and Lord under the late Bishop J.T. Bowens. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle in Washington, DC for over half a century and was always honored to be on the board of trustees.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two siblings, and two beloved sons. Truly leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy his loving wife Inez, devoted son Jonathan; a brother Dr. Verdise Rollins (Dr. Iris); sister Deloris Rollins Blaine, sister Olivia Harris (Sherman); his oldest grandson Darius J. Rollins (Stan & Gail); Nina Rollins, his only granddaughter, grandsons Marcus and Isaac Rollins (Vic & Karen). And many, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

I will miss Uncle Truly's humor and gentle spirit. My favorite memory is every Christmas when we gathered at grandmommy's house and opened presents he made bird sounds. I was 10 years old before I realized that there was no bird in that artificial tree! Rest in Peace.
