Louise Smith Obituary

** Due to the weather event over the weekend, the graveside service for Louise has been postponed. When details are available for the rescheduled service, we will post details here** Louise Rebecca Smith was born August 31, 1917, in Ontario, Canada, the youngest child of Deloss and Cecelia (Trepanier) Fraba. Both of her parents were musical, her mother a pianist and her father a violinist, and Louise had fond memories of time she spent with her father performing at town dances. Louise’s mother passed away when she was young, and her father was caught up in the gold rush and spent time in Alaska. Louis’s father passed away when she was a young adult. Louise married Russell R. Smith on June 22, 1941, in Chehalis, Washington, and they made their home together in Salem, Oregon. The couple never had children and just before celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary, Russell passed away at the age of 41. Louise was artistic and talented at plaster and ceramics and had her own business called Plaster and Ceramic Art by Louise. She turned her west Salem home into a ceramic artwork factory, teaching classes two nights a week and was considered one of the best teachers in the Willamette Valley. Well loved and respected in the community and by family, she was kind, friendly, easy to get along with, and fun to be around. Louise was a strong woman, always standing for what she believed, but also able to admit when she had a faulty belief. Louise was a generous woman, supporting a Native American school for their education for many years. She showed true respect for all things in this crazy world of ours. As she aged and needed more assistance with her daily living, Louise lived at Four Seasons Residential Care and then was a long-term resident at Sweet Bye and Bye, where she was adored by the staff and will be remembered as a sweet lady by all those that cared for her. Louise made a dear friend, Joyce Adams, and the two enjoyed their time together. They both loved to read and would share books with each other. Both ladies lived to be outdoors and would spend time sitting outside basking in the sun, taking “rolls” around the building in their wheelchairs for a change of scenery and some exercise. As Louise and Joyce both lost their hearing, they would still chat away with each other while maybe not always having the same conversation. They made many cherished memories together over the years until Joyce’s passing in 2017. After Joyce passed, her daughter Holly continued to visit Louise because she was so fun to visit with. Louise loved all of nature and animals and loved the stories Holly would tell of the wildlife that visited the creek behind her home. Louise was very fond of rabbits and ducks, and those stories were her favorite.   Louise passed away in Salem, Oregon, on January 21, 2021, at the glorious age of 103. She outlived most of her family, extended family, and friends and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell, and her friend Joyce Adams.  She is survived by her cousin Christina Wright and her friend Holly Cain, and her many beloved caregivers at Sweet Bye and Bye. Louise will be laid to rest beside her husband Russell at City View Cemetery in Salem.
