George Anthony Rowland Obituary

George Anthony Rowland was born on September 13, 1950 in Washington, District of Columbia. He is the son of the late Andrew William Rowland and Odessa Luvenia Moore Rowland. He was married for 29 years to Sandra Workman Rowland and the proud father of daughter Brianne Rowland-Seabrook (Jonathan) of Fayetteville GA, son Malik George Rowland, of Wingate NC and Tuscaloosa AL; also, Devonna Williams-Moreland (Everette) of Arden NC, Vaniece Williams-Honeycutt (Nicholas) of Monroe NC, Monte Williams (Elizabeth) of Charlotte NC and grandchildren Erianna Moreland and Jayden Honeycutt. He was preceded in death by sisters Claudette Teresa Rowland and Diane Mary Rowland. Surviving are sisters Claudia Marie Commons of FL, Andrea Stafford and brothers Antonio Rowland, James G. Rowland, Andrew Rowland and Michael Rowland, all of the District of Columbia. Also, left to cherish is Aunt Sis-Violetta and Aunt Joyce, also many nieces, nephews and cousins. George made his home in Wingate and formerly Asheville, NC. He was educated at McKinley Technical High School in Washington DC, then Northeastern University where he studied and received both his Bachelor and Master's degrees in Math Education and Counseling. He later became a Counselor and Administrator at Northeastern University and Counselor at the University of Maryland. He is a former teacher of the Asheville School, at the time known as Asheville School for Boys, where he was the first Black Teacher and Coach. He also taught at the following schools of Asheville High, Monroe Middle, East Union Middle and Marvin Ridge Middle School. He is retired from NC State Teachers - Union County Schools. George loved mentoring and instructing students, and came out of retirement to work as a Tutor for Union County Schools. Most importantly, George was committed to his church family as an Elder, Deacon and Audio Technician at the Pageland Seventh-day Adventist Church and Door of Hope Community Food Pantry in Pageland, South Carolina. He has touched the lives of many and will truly be missed.
