William Lee Dancy Obituary

William Lee Dancy passed away January 20, 2021. Bill or Lee as his parents and family called him died at the age of 87. He is survived by the love of his life his wife, Jeanette, married 60 years on November 05, 1960 at St. John the Baptist Church in Canton and two children Michelle and Michael. He, also, leaves three grandchildren Bianca, Kaley, and Christina who loved him dearly. He was the second oldest of four born in SW Canton in 1933 to parents, Robert and Ira Dancy from North Carolina that met and married in Canton. He spent most of his childhood on a small farm in SW Canton and graduated from Canton South High School in 1951 where he was an intelligent student and talented football player. After graduation he joined the Marines and was soon sent to fight in the Korean War. He was an artillery forward observer for the Marines and had engaged in frontline combat. He was one of two survivors from an enemy attack on his platoon. He received a Bronze Star for holding off the enemy and a Purple Heart from a shrapnel wound. After he was honorably discharged from the service he worked in Cleveland while attending a technical college for his Computer Programmer Certification. After his marriage to Jeanette Marie Nicola and starting his family in Canton he had many occupations to make sure his family was comfortably supported. Bill (Lee) worked as a computer programmer, handyman, professional painter, radio/TV tower mechanic/painter and retired after 28 years as a steel worker and train engineer for Republic Steel in Canton. He was a very hard working man and made sure his family was well taken care of in good times and bad. He devoted his life to his family, friends, and the Catholic Church where he became a member at the age of 41 of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in North Canton. Not only did his family and friends come first and foremost in his life so did all his married family members. He spent much of his life using his handyman/painting talents for any family or friend in need. William Dancy was enormously loved by all who knew him because of his unconditional caring and kind heart. Time and time again he proved his toughness and moral character. While working as a train engineer he not only survived a possible fatal train engine collision but also walked away with minor cuts and bruises. From his apparent tough exterior there was deep respect and unconditional love. His traumatic military experiences gave him the ability to live a full life of hard work, high morals, decency and caring toward all people. He was always glad to meet people and show respect to all those around him. He greatly enhanced people’s lives using his natural kindness and talents. By placing those in his life first he made life much easier and happier for all that knew him especially his wife and children. He will be greatly missed. The best way anyone could honor his passing is to treat all with respect and love and always provide unconditional assistance to others. Family and friends will meet on Monday at 3 p.m. at Saint Paul Catholic Church (North Canton) for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Reverend John Keehner, JCL as celebrant. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Stark County.
