Darilyn S. Fritz Obituary

Darilyn Sanger (nee Weatherby) Fritz, a long time resident of Albuquerque, passed away in Lone Tree, Colorado on January 15, 2021. She was born in Cushing, Oklahoma into a family of pioneering physicians, and grew up in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. As a senior in high school the oil business took her family to Casper, Wyoming where she graduated from Natrona County High School. She attended the University of Wyoming and returned to Casper where she met, and later married, her husband Joe Frank Fritz. The oil business took them to Denver (where daughter Amy was born), Bismarck, ND, and Regina, Saskatchewan (where daughter Sarah was born). After years of surviving some of the coldest inhabited regions in North America, a move to sunny New Mexico was welcome in the early 1960’s (where son John was born). Once in New Mexico Darilyn renewed her passion for tennis, a sport her father taught her. On the courts at the Albuquerque Tennis Club, the only thing more fierce than Darilyn’s forehand was her deep love of her tennis “sisters” (known collectively to their children as the Mother’s Intelligence Agency). Male opponents who dared charge the net against her could expect a round fuzzy green missile fired their way at eye level. She was always working to improve her home. She wielded the fastest paint rollers in the southwest. She laid a perfectly level brick patio single handedly. She loved designing, remodeling and decorating her new home in Los Ranchos, and another later in Lone Tree. As a master gardener, everywhere she lived had gardens blossoming with beautiful flowers, laden with loads of delicious tomatoes and shaded by beautiful trees. Darilyn had a “spicy” personality - a Tiger Mom before Tiger Moms were cool, and a Mama Bear to her kids, and many of her kids' friends. One did not cross this mother (looking at you Highland High School Administration!). You never had to guess her opinion on any issue and the best way to win an argument with her was not to argue with her. And if any of her kids, all angels of course, ever got into trouble - they called dad first! Darilyn channeled love through her cooking and kitchen, where her southern roots met southwestern cuisine. Mississippi Mud Cake, fried chicken, pralines, green chile and cheese grits, amaretto roll with hand crafted chocolate leaves and Fritz family salads. Her snack pantry was legendary, attracting a constant stream of her kid’s friends for after school snacks, study breaks, and late night Star Trek viewings. She loved entertaining friends with elaborate meals, cocktails and lots of laughter. Frustratingly, she was one of those people who could eat just about anything and never gain weight- a genetic trait she failed to pass along to her children. Darilyn was predeceased by husband Joe in 2008. She is survived by her children, (who still sit up very straight and watch their manners) Amy Kirsch (Marlin) of Denver, CO, Sarah Fuller (David) of Hardy, VA, and John Fritz (Bonnie) of Los Gatos, CA. She has five grand-children: Carrie, Daniel, Michael, Ben and Gwyn, as well as four great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you cook your most favorite, decadent dessert and enjoy it with your family and closest friends; laugh a lot and love each other.
