Elizabeth "Liz" Wetzstein Obituary

Elizabeth “Liz” Wetzstein was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and true friend to many. She left this world suddenly on January 16, 2021 at the age of 73.

Liz was born on July 16, 1947 in Burt, ND to Pete and Angeline (Wilt) Friesz. She grew up in Burt where she attended school. Liz was united in marriage to Karl R. Wetzstein on June 26, 1964 and they lived a happy life together until Karl’s death in March, 1994. Together, they had four children: Gary Karl, Gail Joyce, Gene Allen, and Grant Carter. The middle name is significant because if you were in trouble from mom, this is how you were addressed.

Liz enjoyed taking care of others and always put others before herself. She was employed for over two decades as a CNA at Jacobson Memorial Hospital. She then worked at the Hettinger Hospital for a number of years until making a career change as a residential trainer at Live Inc. Post “retirement”, Liz continued to serve others and provided in-home care while in Florida and worked in dietary at Jacobson Memorial Hospital. When we asked her frequently to slow down and stop working, the energizer bunny would say, “this is not work, I’m visiting my friends”.

Liz had many hobbies: reading, gardening, puzzle master, cooking/ baking, traveling, CNN, spoiling our children rotten with Pepsi and Freedent, and a good game of Bingo. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with all of her family: cooking a big meal, going to their sporting events, the drag races, a casino trip, or any family event. She was able to share her wonderful self with all of her family, snow-birding to Florida for the winters.

We are all so blessed to have been in Liz’s life. She taught us so many valuable lessons over the years, many of them unspoken. She always stood up for what was right, the underdog or those who couldn’t stand up for themselves, and her family and friends. She saw the best and most potential in everyone and this is one of the many things that made her so special. She was clearly an angel sent from heaven who provided for so many.

If there is any peace in all of this, it is that Liz passed exactly as she desired, peacefully in her own home. She is now resting and reunited with her one true love, Karl.

Liz is survived by her children: Gary (Mott, ND), Gail (Jamestown, ND), Gene (Lisa, Tampa, FL), and Grant (Angie, Mott ND); mother (Angie Friesz); siblings (Larry, Rosie, Paul, Margie, John, MaryAnn, and Roger); grandchildren (Cody, Jasmin, Erik, Kylan, April, Jacob, Caleb, and Carter); great grandchildren (Layla, Nola, Espen, Octavia, and Easton) as well as many nephews and nieces.

The Family will be having a Celebration of Life for Liz at a later date to be determined.

Please send your memories and condolences to the Wetzstein Family, PO Box 71, New Leipzig, ND 58562.
