Dorothy Caroline Hemenway Obituary

Dorothy Caroline Hemenway (nee Young) was born September 20, 1929 in St. Louis, MO to Walter and Bertha (nee Koester) Young. She passed away peacefully to be with the Lord, while surrounded by family and friends, on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. Dorothy was the only child growing up in the house on Penrose in North City, from which her father would travel to close-by Emerson Electric where he worked for over 50 years. At 7 or 8 years old, she watched across the alley behind the house, from her perch on the coal bin, as her new neighbors moved in. Within days she had formed a friendship that would last a lifetime with June Heger (nee Fowler). The girls went to school together (Beaumont High School) and they pledged the same sorority at Mizzou (Gamma Phi Beta). They served as each other’s bridesmaids and had a friendship that lasted over 84 years. Dottie, as her friends called her, was also a member of a high school girls’ sorority (Beta Alpha Beta -BAB) whose members, but for the pandemic, would still be meeting for lunch monthly to this day. After graduating from her beloved Mizzou with a degree in Education, Dottie earned her state certificate and went to work at the school in Jennings. Education remained a huge part of her focus throughout her life. She taught elementary school, read to her children constantly from a young age, shepherded them through school and into careers, and read on her Kindle and iPad well into her 80’s. Regardless of where her own life circumstances took her, she valued learning every day. Dottie married W.D. Hemenway III and from that marriage had four children: W. D. Hemenway IV (Bill) and wife Amie (nee Archambault), Christie Hemenway and her partner Allen Scott, Sarah (Sallie) Hemenway, and Susan (Suzy) Hemenway. Dottie adored her precious granddaughter Mimi Elizabeth and Mimi’s husband Berry Benedick. Her life brought her to Arizona and Colorado before she returned to St. Louis when the family unit changed. Dottie’s career turned from teaching to McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, where she met her partner, Tim McCann. They had a loving relationship for decades traveling the world and genuinely enjoying each other’s company. Dottie was a life-long Cardinal fan and enjoyed games at every stadium throughout the years. When not attending, she enjoyed listening to the games on the radio. She was incredibly skilled at needlepoint and her belts and pillows still adorn her children's homes today. She had tremendous familiarity with the City and neighborhoods of St. Louis, and she was loyal to her favorite deli’s, boutiques, and stores. She had a great, loud laugh and a beautiful smile. She enjoyed good company and good conversation. She was loved so very much by her friends and family and she will be greatly missed. During the last several months of her life, Dottie received exceptional care from the staff at Lourdes at Les Maisons – Dolan Care Homes. On behalf of the Hemenway Family, a special thank you to all the staff at Dolan for their kindness, loving care and friendship so easily given to our mother. Thirty years ago, Dottie arranged for one final nod to education at the end of her life by participating in the Washington University Medical School donation program. The family will plan a memorial service at a later date. Memorial donations to Dottie’s favorite charities may made in her name: Gamma Phi Beta Foundation Alpha Delta Chapter 12737 E. Euclid Drive Centennial, CO 80111-6445 gammaphibeta.org or the St. Joseph’s Indian School 1301 North Main Street Chamberlain, SD 57325 saintjosephs@stjo.org
