Rev. Dr. William L Rhines Jr. Obituary

Dr. Rhines held Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) and Masters of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) Degrees, from Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In addition, he held Doctor of Ministry Degree (D.Min.) from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Divinity Degree (D.D.), from Northwestern University; both in Evanston, Illinois. He was senior Elder of Black United Churches in New Castle, County. He was the Dean of African American Ministry in Delaware; and, also Ambassador for Christ to African American Churches and Communities. Dr. Rhines was called to a ministry of empowerment and elevation of African Americans. Dr. Rhines was former professor of: United Methodist Church Seminarians, in Psychiatry and Psychology of Pastoral Care, at Wilmington Hospital, In Wilmington, Delaware; Black American Studies and Sociology, at University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware; and Middlesex County College, Sociology Department, Edison, New Jersey. While in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he was a Clinical Social Worker. Dr. Rhines was an ordained Elder in the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference, of the United Methodist Church. He pastored for eight years in Southern New Jersey. Dr. Rhines and wife Marie were former members of Ezion-Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, in Wilmington, Delaware, where he served on boards and agencies. He was President and Life-Member of United Methodist Men. He and his wife, Marie joined Mt. Joy United Methodist Church, in Wilmington, Delaware under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. H. Ward Greer. While at Mt. Joy United Methodist Church, Dr. Rhines was appointed Scholar-In-Residence by Bishop Peggy A. Johnson. Dr. Rhines was born June 14, 1942 and was the eldest son of Mr. Leroy and Evangelist Katie Rhines (both deceased). He was one of three siblings: brother, Siddeeq (Faheema) El-Amin and sister, Rosalind G. Hargrave. He is survived by a special cousin Mr. Henry Rhines (Doris), sister-in-law, Beverly D. Dickerson, brothers-in-law, Ogden F. Dickerson, Jr. (Dorothy), and John R. Bailey, Sr. Also survived by cohort of Summit, N.J. High School classmates who recently connected with him and were very concerned about his care and well-being at New Castle Health and Rehabilitation Center where he resided the past fifteen months. Dr. Rhines was married to Marie Dickerson, McFarland-Rhines for 34 years, and they have sons, Michael A. McFarland and Lamar Moose. He is also survived by his spiritual daughter, Deborah Dungee, his Delta Sorority sister, Terry Jenkins and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his special church family that he dearly loved, at Mt. Joy United Methodist Church. Dr. Rhines was past Chaplin and Life Member of Nu Upsilon Chapter, of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in Wilmington, Delaware. Sorrowfully Submitted, Our Family
