Gary Arthur Schwarzkopf Obituary

Gary Arthur Schwarzkopf passed away on January 17, 2021 at his home in Mancos, CO surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Ashton, Iowa on August 24, 1938 to Arthur Schwarzkopf and Alethia Schwarzkopf (Eichman). Gary graduated from Sibley High School in Sibley, Iowa. After high school, he attended Worthington Community College for two years and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa. Later he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Vocational Education from Iowa State University. Gary started his teaching career in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1964 and taught at Thomas Jefferson High School until 1975. After leaving teaching, he spent several years building custom homes in Council Bluffs. Gary eventually returned to teaching in 1984 when he took a teaching position at the San Juan Basin Vocational School in Cortez, CO where he taught building trades until his retirement in 1996 due to disability. Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He was always up for an adventure. Surviving Gary are his wife, Patricia Schwarzkopf; his two daughters, Lisa Schwarzkopf (Tim Robinson), and Jolene Miller (Dean); four adult step-children, Daniel McClain, Tamara Wenderlich, Karin Brown, Melanie McGrath; his siblings, Daryl Schwarzkopf (Shirley), Rose Draper, and Robert Schwarzkopf; 11 grandchildren, Gerrit, Claire, Jenny, Emory, Michael, Ryan, Benjamin, Erica, Mallory, Meredith and Jake; 5 great grandchildren; and his two dogs, Charlie and Lucky. Gary was preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel. Plans for celebration of Gary’s life will be announced at a later date.
