Obituary

Richard “Dick” Scherer, 95, God took his hand and Dick was eagerly ready to go to his promise land, after a long struggle with dementia. Dick was born in Strasburg, Ohio to Albert and Bernice (Reiss) Scherer on New Year’s day in 1926 with snow blowing under the kitchen door.

At twelve years old, Dick brought electric into the house from the barn so his sister, Florence, could play the radio that she received from her boyfriend Chuck.

Dick was the last survivor of his 1943 class at Fresno High School. After high school he answered Uncle Sam’s call to duty in the US Navy where he was a 3E aboard the USS Fulton ASII, as an electrician’s mate. He fought in the South Pacific and was very proud to have served his country.

Dick was a tinkerer, always repairing projects for his family and friends. If a part was obsolete, he made it. Dick’s hands were never idle. He enjoyed working with his sons on electrical projects of their own. He was a former fireman of North Tuscarawas Fire Department, a lifetime member of the NRA and the Fresno Bible Church. Dick retired from Cyclops and AK Steel after 32 years.

Dick leaves behind his loving wife of 44 years, Margie (Sibert) Scherer; 3 daughters Karen (Ray) Mizer, Anita Pearch, Cherlyn (Matt) Leppla; sons Keith (Trudy) Scherer and Craig Scherer; step children Carla (Chuck) Baumer, Cris (Shawn) Ramsey, Clint (Elizabeth) Wright, Charee (Brian) Noe, a sister Verdella Lowery; sisters in law Joan Scherer, Bess VanAtta, and Joan (John) Glimore; several grandchildren and great children, and a great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are brothers Carl (Donna) Scherer, Raymond Scherer; sister Florence (Chuck) Corbett; son John Scherer, stepson Curtis Wright, and grandson Chris Scherer.

The Scherer family would like to thank his nurses Gary, Sarah, and Martha and his aides Megan, Shaylyn, Olivia, and Lisa. Everyone was so loving and kind. They would also like to thank Coshocton Ambulance Services, friends and neighbors.

A Memorial Service will be held at Fresno Bible Church, 24629 SR 93, Fresno, OH 43824 on Saturday January 23, 2021 at 1:00pm with Pastor Chris Cutshall officiating. The Coshocton County Veterans Council will be performing military honors.
