Frederick Earl MYERS

<p><span style="font-size:14px;">After a long battle with cancer, Fred passed away in Ty Watson House with Arleen by his side, Tuesday January 12, 2021.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px;">Fred was born in Wallaceburg, Ontario August 9th, 1926, the 4th of 12 children born to Fred and Margret. He is predeceased by his parents; his first wife Alida; and most of his siblings. He is survived by his present partner, Arleen;&nbsp;two of his siblings, brother Glen and sister Carol;&nbsp;his five children Wendy, Paul, Ivan, John and Alan, stepdaughters Haleen, and Corinne; 9 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px;">Fred started working in Wallaceburg at the age of thirteen. In the spring of 1946 at the age of nineteen he, his older sister Opal and her husband decided to drive out west for more opportunities, they all decided that the then booming town of Port Alberni held those opportunities and settled there. He first took employment at the APL sawmill where he worked for a few months seeing better opportunity he moved on to the construction of the pulp mill after which, when completed in 1947 he hired on to work in the mills steam plant where he became a steam engineer he remained there until his retirement forty-two years later in 1989.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px;">When he first settled in the Valley coming from the flat lands of southern Ontario, he felt confined by the mountains that surrounded the Valley however being a lover of the outdoors he soon come to love those same mountains climbing and hunting many of those same mountains and fishing the many lakes in the valleys they formed. One of his favorite hikes was that to Della Falls, first done after rowing up Great Central Lake with his then future brother in-law Alvin Roth in 1947 his final trip to visit this cherished spot was for his eightieth birthday in 2006.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px;">Another of his favorite hikes was the west coast trail which he completed many times starting in the early 1960s as a leader of the cherry creek boy scouts, well before it was a destination hike. He completed this hike three more times, with his children.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:14px;">Canoeing and bicycle riding were also some of his favorite pastimes, he and his son, John completed a ride back to Ontario to visit with family and to contemplate life after the passing of his first wife in 1977. He continued riding his bicycle until last February 2020.
