Olive Ada Veitch

Olive Ada (Walker) Veitch passed away on January 18th, 2021 at the age of 100. Our mother was born October 25th, 1920 near Fleming Sask. She was the third daughter of James Nicol Walker and Ada Barber (Pinder) Walker. Mom was the third child out of 15 children, 9 girls and 6 boys.

Mom attended Mossgiel school in the Elkhorn Manitoba area. She went to school until grade 8. Mom always wanted to be a teacher but was unable to fulfill that dream. However, three of her children and one granddaughter became teachers.

After she left school, Mom worked for a few families in the area. She bought herself a pair of black patent shoes with her first money and she was so proud. One of her employers encouraged Mom to go to Brandon to attend a school for girls to learn about home economics. While there Mom got a job at Safeway. It was in Brandon where she met Jean Brown. She was invited to Jean's wedding which was in Rossburn, Manitoba, and that is where she met Rowatt Veitch (Jean's cousin). They were married in Elkhorn, Manitoba, November 19, 1947, a very snowy day according to Mom. They enjoyed the Santa Claus parade in Winnipeg on their honeymoon.

Mom and Dad lived on the family farm near Birdtail, MB from 1947-1962, and moved the farm house into Rossburn when Dad became the Postmaster there. Life on the farm was good, lots of hard but rewarding work. Due to the lack of power on the farm, food was stored in an ice house. The blocks of ice were covered in straw. Mom told us of a time when she went to get something from the ice house, brushed away the straw and touched a lizard! Not sure who was more surprised, her or the lizard.

Our mother was an excellent cook and a terrific baker, a skill she learned from her mother. We remember so many wonderful dishes that were produced by her capable hands....like gingersnaps, jam-jams, bread, buns. Her kitchen always had a wonderful aroma and we would look forward to whatever snack she had waiting for us after school. Our brother would lie on the living room floor with the cookie jar right beside him enjoying the delectable in there.

Mom was always home and we would call out, ''Mom, we are home.” always expecting her to be there. She always was.

Mom was a true homemaker, not only did she cook and clean she sewed clothes and knitted sweaters, scarfs, socks and toques and mitts. She loved gardening both vegetables and flowers. She talked fondly of picking flowers for her mother when she was a young girl. The raspberry patch was her happy place. It yielded jams and jellies. Mom never wasted anything, a condition learned from growing up in the dirty 30's. One of her happy memories is being able to pick cherries from an orchard in BC. The year was 1979 and the cherries were bumper crop portions that year.

Another one of her loves was music, especially the bagpipes. She also liked Johnny Cash and Daniel O'Donnell. She enjoyed listening to her grandson, Jeremy Allen, while he played the flute. Mom loved attending church, listening to the hymns and the sermons.

Mom was also an ardent walker, walking countless miles over her life time, even a broken hip in her 90's didn’t slow her down much.

She loved playing cards with her sister in law, Lorna Veitch. and many of her friends.

Our mother was an excellent cook and a terrific baker, a skill she learned from her mother. Her kitchen always had a wonderful aroma and we would look forward to whatever snack she had waiting for us after school.
