William Kanigan Obituary

KANIGAN, William W.

William “Bill” Kanigan passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon on January 15, 2021. He suffered with chronic illnesses in later life but fought bravely through the challenges. He was born into a Christian family in Kylemore, SK on December 24, 1931 and remained a devoted follower of Jesus Christ his entire life. He loved the prairies and made Saskatoon his home for more than 55 years. While growing up on a farm, along with his chores he enjoyed riding horses, rafting on the local slough and playing hockey. He was very competitive and enjoyed softball and curling during his teens. As a youngster, he had the entrepreneurial drive and his first endeavor was selling greeting cards in his local community. After attending Wadena High School he ventured to the Yukon, working in the mining industry. Bill established Kanigan Home Furnishings in the 50’s and continued in retail furniture. He and Rnold Smith formed a partnership through Buy Rite Furniture and over the years, the business flourished. They had a harmonious relationship, both valuing each other’s contribution. He enjoyed golfing at Riverside, fishing for pickerel at Iroquois Lake and times with friends and associates over coffee. He travelled extensively through business and for pleasure, visiting Hong Kong, South Korea and North American markets. Winters were enjoyed in Kauai with Doris and often with daughter Karen. A highlight was his trip to Russia and Greece in the company of son Ryan. Australia was also a very special place where he spent time with his son Kim, grandson Robin, Lesle and family. A very social person, he valued fellowship with friends and especially participating in his faith choir. Bill is survived by his wife Doris (nee Bykowy), children Karen, Kim (Lesle) and Ryan (Nancy Paris), grandson Robin and step grandchildren Camrin, Megan and Mia. He leaves his sister Natalie Austin, sister-in-law Bernice Kanigan, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Mary, brother Cecil, brother-in-law Sam Austin and in-laws Rose and Mike Bykowy, Walter and Ollie Bykowy. He had a huge heart and touched many lives. Family and faith were most important to him, always supportive and encouraging. Bill Kanigan, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend remains forever in our hearts. Due to Covid restricitons, a memorial will be planned for a later date. Floral tributes gratefully declined. If desired, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements in care of Chelsea Krentz – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
