Mary Jordan De Briyn Obituary

We lost our sweet 95 year old Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, neighbor, and friend on Monday, January 11, due to natural causes. Mary Jordan De Briyn, born October 11, 1925, in Houston, TX, lived her early years in Victoria, TX. She met her husband, a young Army Air Corps training pilot, Raymond Joseph De Briyn, at Aloe Airfield. They were married in 1944 and spent the next 25 years traveling the world as a U.S. Air Force officer’s family. They lived in the Azores, France, Germany, Japan, and all over the U.S. They retired in 1969 in San Antonio. Mary is survived by their 3 children, Jane De Briyn, Raymond Joseph De Briyn, Jr. and his wife, Mary Anne, and Melinda De Briyn Johnson and her husband, Jim. In addition to her children, Mary has 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Mary was pre-deceased by her husband in 2007, and by her parents, 3 sisters, and a brother. Mary lived her later years, enjoying her friends and neighbors in San Antonio at the Army Residence Center. She was a loving, creative, energetic mother and grandmother, an avid golfer, a voracious reader, and loved playing mahjong. She volunteered in her community library and served as a Eucharistic minister in her church. She had a “green thumb” and a lovely garden, with African violets that thrived beyond imagination. We give special thanks to those who loved and supported her in friendship, her dear neighbors and friends in the ARC, and especially Jose Villa, her dedicated medical advisor, AIP Hospice, and Alicia Vargas. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband privately in January, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Mary’s wish is that in lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to an organization or charity of your choice.
