Dennis G. Scott Obituary

Dennis George Scott, age 74, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior on January 17, 2021 after valiantly living with Parkinson’s Disease for over twenty years.

Dennis was born in Brighton, Michigan on May 28, 1946 to George Channing Scott and Dorothy Emily (Petsch) Scott, was a graduate of Brighton High School and attended Western Michigan University. In July, 1966, Dennis was drafted into the United States Army to serve in Vietnam with the Second Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment (Blackhawks). He was a decorated combat veteran receiving the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service medal, 3 Bronze Service Stars, Sharpshooter qualification badge and Presidential Unit Citation.  He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and held various offices in all three organizations.  He proudly served as the Commander of the St. Johns Honor Guard for over thirty years.  Dennis also served on the Clinton County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Committee and the Ingham County Veteran’s Trust Committee for over thirty years.  He served as president of the Second Squadron, First Armored Cavalry Association of Vietnam Veterans for many years and enjoyed planning reunions with his veteran brothers.  Dennis was honored with induction into the Lansing Community College Veterans Memorial in 2012 and into the Order of St. George in 2016.

Dennis served as Chairman for the building of the Clinton County Veteran’s Memorial on Clinton Avenue in St. Johns.  He worked tirelessly and was instrumental in the fundraising, promotion, and encouragement needed to bring the Veterans Memorial to fruition.  For him, it was a labor of love, and a privilege to do his part to forever honor all in Clinton County who selflessly served their country.

Dennis was always driven, and worked hard in his sales career and enjoyed writing in the sports column for the St. Johns Reminder along with freelance writing for several magazines.  Outside of work he loved deer hunting with his son and friends and neighbors at the cabin in West Branch.  In St. Johns, he and Janet have enjoyed fellowship with Two Or More Christian Church for many years.  Family was ever important to him and he was a loving husband and father.   He was a humble, selfless, and honorable man who touched and shaped many throughout his life.  He will be sorely missed.

In addition to Janet, his beloved wife of over fifty-years, he is survived by his son, Bill (Kendra) Scott; daughter, Elizabeth Scott; grandchildren, Levi Scott, Jessica Scott, Mitchell Van Note, Bryce Van Note, Jacob, Elijah and Noah Tillmann; sister, Doreen (the late Al) Lomik; sisters-in-law, Joyce Ball, Carol (Dennis) Wright; uncle, Kenny (Cheryl) Petsch and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emma Joy Tillmann and brother, James (Faith) Scott.

A Memorial Service will be held at McGeehan Funeral Home Keck-Coleman Chapel in St. Johns when it is safe to gather all of Dennis’ family and friends in his honor.  Full Military Honors and interment will take place at Mt. Rest Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Clinton County Veteran Memorial Fund, in care of McGeehan Funeral Home Keck-Coleman Chapel 1500 Waterford Pkwy. St. Johns, MI 48879.
