Erma Jean Berg

Erma Jean Berg, age 79 passed away at home on Saturday, January 16, 2021. She is remembered for her sweet, happy, and generous ways. A delight to be around and was known to say “look on the bright side”. Erma was born on January 1, 1942 in Perry, Iowa to parents William “Jay” and Eva (Van Newkirk) Smith. She attended Bottineau High School in North Dakota. Erma met Morris Berg through work. They were married July 12, 1963 in Bottineau, North Dakota. The couple moved to Lynden, Washington in 1977 buying a home just off the Lynden Airport. A favorite pastime was watching the planes land and take off. She was a loving and dedicated grandma. Erma was a fantastic cook and was known for her pies. She was a cook for The Lunch Bucket restaurant and The Sidewalk Café in Lynden. Erma was known by everyone in the Bellis Fair Mall for her daily walks in the mall. Morris and Erma often traveled to see family in North Dakota, Las Vegas, and California. Erma is survived by her husband of 57 years Morris, children Tammy Berg, Kimberly Berg, and Rob (Lisa) Berg; grandchildren Kurt (Tracy) Berg, Corby Berg, Brittney (Zach) Graves, Alexa Smiley, Wynter Holleman, and Nathan Berg; and great grandchildren Kenley, Adalynn Berg. She will be greatly missed by sisters Joyce Helgeson of Bottineau, June Smith of Henderson, NV, and Janice (Don) Fuchs in Albuquerque, NM. Erma is preceded by her parents, brothers Jerry Smith and Eldon Smith, sisters Joann Fuchs and Jennie Smith, and daughter in law Joelle (Hamstra) Berg. A memorial service will be at Hope Lutheran Church, Lynden on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 10 a.m. We invite you to participate by watching the live stream at https://www.facebook.com/GilliesFuneralHomeAndCremationServices.
