Harlan Dean Schick went to his Heavenly home January 13, 2021 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri after falling at home on December 23rd and receiving emergency surgery and contracting a sudden illness. Harlan was born December 14, 1931 in Marion Co., Kansas, being the third of 10 children to Herbert and Clara (Martens) Schick. Harlan worked for many years for the Missouri State Highway Dept. in Lamar, Mo., then going to Mattis Brothers Construction and then Masters and Yount before going to work at the Joplin Special Road District. He always loved running the road grader so when he retired from his last job, he bought his own grader and operated it for many years as owner & operator before retiring for a 2nd time. He took pride in his work and everyone bragged about the jobs he done. Harlan was a proud veteran of his service in the US Army, serving in Germany. During his time there he was able to meet up with his brother Vern for a visit, who was also serving in the Army. Harlan married Joan (Borghardt) Schick on August 16, 1988 in Reno, Nevada, while meeting up with his younger brother Garry & future wife Susie for a double wedding. Together Harlan and Joan enjoyed 32 years of marriage. Harlan loved to ride motorcycles and for many years they made numerous road trips and vacations on their bike. Harlan was a man who loved his family with all his heart. Harlan and Joan never missed a family reunion to celebrate their love for their large family. Everybody always looked forward to their smiles and their hugs. His love for his family always showed through his face when he talked about them. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents Herb & Clara, three brothers Vern Leslie, James Francis and Robert Gene, four sisters Bernetta Jean, Beatrice Virginia, Annette Elaine and Nancy Jane that passed away at 3 months old. Harlan is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Debbie Bryant with husband Raymond of Joplin, son Mike Schick of Joplin and step-daughter Pamela Sprouls with husband Doug of Sheldon, Mo., sister Violet Houdyshell and brother Garry Schick with wife Susie both of Joplin, grandsons Raymond Bryant with wife Heather, Coty Bryant, Doug and Josh Sprouls, granddaughters Elizabeth Banwart with husband Jason and Rebekah Borghard with husband Scott and 17 great grandchildren.
