Luren "Lu" Gavlick Obituary

Mrs. Luren Schweers Gavlick, 86, passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by her beloved children. She was born on February 2, 1934 in Hondo, Texas to Minnie Oefinger Schweers and Henry William Schweers. The youngest of three girls, Luren spent her childhood in Verdina, Texas on her father’s ranch and attended Verdina School, a one-room schoolhouse, with her sisters. As a small child, she spoke only German and had to learn English to attend school. Her family then moved to Hondo where she enrolled in Hondo High School and her father became a butcher. Luren was a drummer in the band and was voted the most beautiful of her senior class. After graduation, she moved to San Antonio and took a job at CPS Energy where she met her husband, Emil Gavlick. She became Catholic and they married February 4, 1956. Their first child was born nine months later. They lived on the south side and Luren dedicated her life to her family. In 1968, they moved to the northside where their children attended Churchill High School. She volunteered at St. Peter - St. Joseph’s Children’s Home, serving on the board, working at the thrift store, and working as an admin at the office. She began nursing school, but she chose not to finish as it took too much time away from her family. In fact, she earned over 200 hours of college credits in search of a career that she hoped to start after launching her children. Luren loved to play bridge and she and Emil took many wonderful vacations around the country and a few internationally. They loved gardening together and both became Master Gardeners. Luren was very involved in the Republican Women’s Club, serving several terms as president. They moved to Canyon Lake in 1995 and then to Independence Hill Retirement Community back in San Antonio in 2014. Luren and her husband were very active in their churches as they moved from St. Lawrence, to Holy Spirit, and to St. Thomas, until Mom ended her days worshipping at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She served in the Altar Society for most of her years. At St. Lawrence, she usually held one of the officer positions. Luren lived a full and blessed life and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil Gavlick; grandson, Phillip Graham; and her sister, Mary Ann Schweers Byers. Luren is survived by her 4 children Cynthia Gavlick Constanzo and husband, Ted Constanzo, Steven Gavlick and wife, Laurie Valentine Gavlick, Donald Gavlick and Sandra Gavlick Graham and husband, Stephen Graham; her 8 living grandchildren, Jason Constanzo, Travis Constanzo and wife, Jaye Dozier Constanzo, Jacob Gavlick and wife, Tiffany Reid Gavlick, Lindsey Gavlick, Annabelle McIntire-Gavlick, Eli McIntire-Gavlick, Julia Graham Poirier, and husband, Justin Poirier, and Kenneth Graham and wife, Sarah Franklin Graham; her two great-grandchildren, Abigail Gavlick and Tobias Gavlick; and her sister, Fay Dell Schweers Wiemers. Rosary will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, January 22, 2021 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 20523 Huebner Road, followed by mass at 2:00 P.M. Committal services will take place at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter - St. Joseph Children’s Home.
