Harold John Broers Obituary

On Monday, Jan. 11, 2021, Harold J. Broers, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather passed away at the age of 94. Harold came from a farming background and was born at home in Cook, NE. Farming may have been in his blood but not in his heart so after a stint in the army at the end of World War II (4th Calvary - Radio Operator), he returned to Nebraska and got a job with the Northern Pacific Railroad. He eventually worked his way up and after several mergers, he was a freight space salesman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe _ a position that suited his outgoing personality. Harold had a firm belief in God and was a lifelong Lutheran. His last church membership was with Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Felida. He used his woodworking and gardening skills there. Harold loved to work in the yard and loved his roses and dahlias. He ate chocolate every day and ended almost ever dinner with the question “What kind of pie?” He stayed active and was a square dancer with the Buzzin’ Bees Square Dance Club until COVID-19 closed things down when he was 93. He loved his dog _ Molly _ and put up with the cat _ Bob. He loved his family and was so proud of each new addition that he would take the new baby around to meet the neighbors. He was known to his grandkids as “Sweetie Papa.” He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Amelia Broers; first wife, Erma Broers; brother, Galen Broers; and daughter, Kristy Broers Lechelt. Harold is survived by his wife, Debbie Kinder Broers; daughter, Diana Broers Gilmour (John); brother, Ken Broers (Genene); stepsons, Joseph Marlett and Timothy Marlett (Megan); grandchildren, Dawn Thatch (Jason), Terra Ralph (Robb), Greg Worf, Tyson Worf (Calina), Alaina Gilmour, John Gilmour (Cara) and Alexander Marlett. He had six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. There will be a small family internment at Finley-Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens and a celebration of life to be held when restrictions are lifted. His gentle soul will be greatly missed.
