SMITH CENTER - Arloa Kay Barnes age 65 passed away on Thursday January 14, 2021 at her home in Smith Center, KS. Arloa Barnes, née Veh, was born in Norton, Kansas on June 17, 1955 to Myron and Darlene. She was the first child of three. Her younger surviving siblings are Darron Veh of Hutchinson, KS and Tona Leiker of Shawnee, KS. The three siblings graduated from Norton High School. Arloa attended Wichita State University and the University of Kansas where she specialized in Physical Therapy. She had a passion for working with children including newborns in the NICU at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She later provided services to children in many rural communities in Northwest Kansas. In 1974, Arloa met her beloved husband, Joe Barnes. They were married for 41 years. They have three children: Lindsey, Joshua, and Connor. Arloa and Joe devoted themselves to healthcare in Smith Center for over 30 years. Arloa enjoyed her American Lutheran Church family as well as activities within the Smith Center community. Through the years she devoted herself to adult and pediatric physical therapy as well as many activities such as children’s dance classes, senior exercise classes, and most recently, fundraising for a new community pool.
