James Edward Washington Obituary

God called James E. Washington home from a lengthy illness. He was born on April 28, 1944, to the late Rachel Cooper Washington and the late James Washington. He grew up in Church Lane in Quaker Neck and attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church at an early age. After returning to Quaker Neck in July 2016, James again attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church and he visited several local churches in Kent County. James was affectionately called Hubbard or Jimmy by those who knew and loved him. He attended Henry Highland Garnet and graduated from high school in 1962. While at Garnet, James participated as a member of the Student Council, the Business Club, the choir and a member of the Basketball Team. In his early years, James worked for several families in Quaker Neck and was later employed by the Campbell Soup Company in Chestertown and from there the party was on. While at Campbell Soup, James met several nice friends. He also served as a role model for several young men, especially for his nephew Curtis. Hubbard moved to Philadelphia in 1966 and retired after 42 years of service with Hertz Rental Car Corporation. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and baseball. While in Philadelphia, he attended The Holy Gospel Church Headquarters on Broad & Popular Street. James had a zeal for life that touched all that he met. He had a million dollar smile and everywhere he went, he met a friend along the way. He enjoyed time with family and friends, sharing laughs and good food. Hubbard dressed to the max, with everything in place from top to bottom. He was especially smooth when riding in his Cadillac with his hat tipped to the side. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a beloved brother, Larry Washington. James leaves to cherish his memory, his children, Monique and James Jr.; two sisters, Joan Groce (Thomas) and Mary Washington Waters; one brother, William Washington (Thelma); two sisters-in-law, Algie Marvel (Laurel, MD) and Gwen Washington (Newark, DE); longtime friend, Margaret Barton (Georgia) and several nieces, nephews and friends. LOVINGLY SUBMITTED BY THE FAMILY
