Maurine G. Little Obituary

Maurine G. Little

Maurine Greeson Little of San Antonio, Texas, born December 21, of a year she thought impolite to discuss, passed away January 6, 2021 after living a great life. Beloved "Bride" of the late Oliver William (O.W.) Little and mother of Leisa Maureen Little Perry and the late Carolynn Little Stampley, cherished grandmother of Jonathan Oliver and Travis Jesse Stampley and Isabella Maurine Little Perry, great grandmother of Oliver and Hunter Stampley, and adored mother in law of William Perry and the late John Stampley. Throughout a trailblazing and adventurous life, Maurine loved her family above all. Born in Lampasas, Texas, Maurine graduated from the University of Texas and taught school until she answered the call in WWII for volunteers with nutritional training and joined the newly created Women’s' Army Air Corp (WAAC). One of the best experiences while being a WAAC, she recalled, was meeting O.W., with whom she shared a lifetime of love and adventure, both in the Air Force and after when they settled in Windcrest. An active participant of the Greatest Generation, Maurine knew Europe as it recovered from WWII, knew China as the Communists came to power, and knew the first astronauts as neighbors in Virginia. These early experiences with history in the making fueled the travel bug she would always have, and she made her way to China and Russia, hopped a last minute ride throughout South America on a C130, and visited Giverny, where her favorite paintings - of water lilies were created. She loved to "view Gods great creations," first hand, from the Rockies to the Alps, the Andes in South America and the Himalayas in Nepal, where she had the marvelous experience of staying in a tree house. Yet, she never forgot beautiful Texas, which she loved the most. Despite all her adventures, Maurine defined herself primarily as a teacher, and she taught wherever she lived, with many years spent at Randolph Air Force Base. Throughout her thirty-plus year career, she taught every grade except college, and was the rare teacher who both parents and students alike remembered, for the caring attention that went far beyond the classroom. Widely known to be sweet and sassy, fun and flirty, Maurine was always impeccable, often in her favorite red. She was an eternal optimist who assumed that anything was possible, a woman of grit and elegance who was unfailingly generous and always up for an adventure. In her own assessment, Maurine said she "had a wonderful life and loved every minute of it." Due to the pandemic, a celebration of Maurine's life will be scheduled at a later time when her family, friends, and extended family at the Army Residence Community can gather for full military honors at Fort Sam Houston and then exchange stories over a margarita.
