Lindsey Cyrus Jr.

Lindsey Cyrus Jr., 92, of Flatwoods, passed away January 11, 2021 at his home.

Mr. Cyrus was born April 9, 1928, in Portsmouth to Lindsey and Adeline Cyrus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Olva Ferguson, Mary Mentzer, Mollie Sue Hatfield, Sara Wilson and Nancy McKenzie; along with two brothers, Charles Cecil and Ronald Ray Cyrus; nieces and nephews, Bill Wilson, Connie Canterberry and Rheada Webb.

While he was growing up in the Advance School District, in Flatwoods, friends would call him Preach. During the summer months, with his brother Charles, they enjoyed working with their cousins on the family farm in Louisa.

During WWII, Jr. enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945. This year a year before graduation. After 50 years, he was presented with his high school diploma; he was very proud to have been remembered and recognized.

While stationed in the Navy with his buddy Clarence Hamilton, he met and married Barbara Grace Fitzpatrick in 1949. After leaving the service they remained in Long Beach, CA. where he was then employed by the Long Beach Shipyards. Their lives were enriched by starting their family with the arrival of JoDell, passing away only four months after her birth. Because of this tragedy, two car loads of Cyrus’s drove to California for the funeral; shortly after three sisters moved to California, soon after his remaining siblings followed.

Lindsey and Barbara were once again blessed by the birth of twin boys, Jerry and Larry. Their flaming locks were the pride and joy of the family. Soon after the arrival of the twins, Lindsey and Barbara moved to Flatwoods, where Barbara gave birth to a daughter, Karen Sue. She shared the birth day of her grandfather, Rev. E. L. Cyrus-a very proud day for him.

In 1959 Larry passed way at the age of 14, bringing the family to their knees. Barbara struggled with the loss of two children and passed away in 1978 at the age of 49.

With the children grown, soon after the passing of Barbara Lindsey returned to Flatwoods to be close to family. In 1982 he married JoAnne Garvin Forrest on his birthday. Lindsey and JoAnne had a blended family surrounding them.

Many stories will be remembered about Lindsey. A few in particular are, his sister, Olva giving him a bath and Lindsey jumping out of the tub, running stark naked out of the house with her chasing him around. He kept his sisters laughing at every get together. During a barbeque, he was known to get up and dance a jig at a moment’s notice. Until he was unable to drive you would find him at the McDonald’s in Flatwoods for an early breakfast.

He is survived by his son, Jerry (Marilyn) Cyrus, of Ashland; grandson, Hunter Cyrus, of Lexington; three step grandchildren; nieces and nephews Saundra K.
