Domenica Nocida

DOMENICA NOCIDA (nee FOTI) With great sorrow, the Nocida family announces the passing of our Mother Domenica Nocida (nee Foti) on Christmas Day, 2020, aged 90. Mom was supported and surrounded by her family during her recent illness and at the time of her peaceful passing. Mamma, will be forever remembered by her family as she joins her loving, predeceased husband, Cosmo (2012). She leaves her children, Maria Torchia (Agostino), Vincenzo Nocida (Sabrina), Carmela Buccini (Tony) and Giuseppina Shaw (Lance). Also surviving Nonna are her 10 precious grandchildren, James (Jody), Joseph (Costanza), Jonathan (Robyn), Nicholas Torchia (Melissa), Elysia and Olivia Nocida, Ariana and Angelica Buccini and Domenica and Juliana Shaw. Surviving her are brothers, Arcangelo (Olga) Foti and Franco (Antonella) Foti, sisters-in-law, Grazia Leonello (Armando) and Carmela Foti (Rocco). Mamma was predeceased by two siblings, Carmela and Rocco. Mamma leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. Our Mother was born in Cosoleto, Italy on April 5, 1930. One of five children, born to Antonino and Giuseppina Foti (Zucco). Mamma and Papa were married in 1957 and immigrated to Canada in 1958, establishing roots in Winnipeg with other family members. She took on numerous jobs to provide for her family, but her legacy most happily remembered will be as the matriarchal “CEO” of her family. Mamma was very savvy with an immense passion for life and especially her family. Her Christian faith was unwavering and she would often be heard reciting the rosary or praying to the saints in between tasks. Mamma possessed a gift of comically recounting stories and tales about family and of yesteryear. She had a gregarious and bigger than life personality and always welcomed people in her home with a smile and hospitality. She had a wide range of interests and talents including sewing, knitting, cooking, gardening, singing and a strong faith, and yet somehow managed to keep abreast of current events, in particular her native Italy. She was almost magical and highly resourceful by often seemingly creating something from nothing like a typical “Nonna”. She always had a little surprise or treat in her cupboard for her grandchildren. Mamma had a unique “Italian Nonna perspective” of the world and gave us decades of colourful comedy, however, we always fully understood the serious underlying message of her sermons. Her intents were one of protector and to help guide and motivate oneself to make human progress in our daily pursuits. A wonderful and valuable gift she left us. Above all, our mother was humble, sincere and loving. She was a dedicated Wife, Mother and Nonna. She provided for a warm and nurturing home. Mamma was unselfish and always put the needs of loved ones before hers. She loved her family immensely and nothing gave her more joy and pleasure than for a simple family dinner gathering at her home. Christmas was her favourite holiday and we feel blessed for her being called on Christmas Day to join our Dad and Nonno. The Family would like to thank Medical/ Nursing Staff at Grace Hospital and her health care provider Dr. K. Lamba, and nurse Indira during her recent health challenges. Given COVID 19 restrictions, a private family funeral will be held at Holy Rosary Church on January 7, 2021 commencing 11:00 a.m (CST). Live streaming of the funeral will be available on https://youtu.be/0nbuZGzSbtM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation or Grace Hospital Foundation.
