Audra Ross
Audra Mae (Snider) Ross, 96, died quietly and gracefully of natural causes on January 11, 2021 in Corinth, Mississippi. She was born February 28, 1924 in Blocker, Oklahoma to Wilbur Clyde and Ella Corabane Collins Snider. She has two children, a daughter Ernestine Cupit (Frank) of Brandon and a son William (Bill) Marvin Ross (Kathy-deceased) of Corinth. Her grandchildren include Dana Cupit Mabry (Jason) of Clinton, Kristi Cupit Cobb (deceased) of Brandon, Melinda Ross Hammons of Corinth and John Freeman Ross of Rienzi. Great grandchildren include Kayson Ross, Emma Hammons, Ashton and Hailee Cobb, and Tyler and James Mabry. Her siblings, all deceased, include Laudra (Cleo-deceased), Prentiss (Elenor-deceased), Gene (Helen-deceased), Dwight (Melba) and EJ (Shirley). Audra has an extensive host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, all of who know her as Aunt Peemie. Her siblings and their families were known to her Mississippi family as “The Oklahoma Bunch” or simply “The Folks”. A fun and lively time was always to be had when The Folks came to visit. The trips usually included a caravan of vehicles, dominos, quilting, plenty of food and stories -- lots of stories, some of them true. Audra’s early years were spent with her brothers and sisters on dairy farms in northeastern Oklahoma, primarily around Henryetta, Schulter and Wetumka. At heart, though, she was an independent rebel child, a trait which has carried forth into multiple generations. At age eighteen she purchased a train ticket and travelled solo to Washington DC with plans to find a big city job. Upon arrival in the DC train depot a handsome young Marine from Mississippi offered to carry her luggage. His name was Johnnie Ernest Ross, and they married shortly thereafter. She got a city job with the federal government, and he served in the Pacific during WWII. They lived in Oklahoma and Mississippi until they parted ways upon his death on October 12, 1993. She enjoyed crochet, cross stitch, needlepoint and bingo, but her favorite pastime was spending time with family and talking about her grown children. She enjoyed watching Ernestine’s garden grow, and she was immensely proud of Bill’s successful career as a physician. She took great pleasure in hosting tea parties, spend-the-night parties, dress-up parties and countless games of hide-the-thimble with her grands and great grands. She was the iconic fun grandmother who liked to ride roller coasters and do the hula hoop. She and her brothers were skilled mathematicians who are likely the only reason her eldest grandchild learned long division and graduated from fifth grade. All the grands and great grands know her affectionately as Menom. Menom the Great. She was loved immeasurably and will never be forgotten.February 28, 1924 - January 11, 202102/28/192401/11/2021
