Richard Timothy Caves Obituary

Richard Timothy Caves, 71, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at his home in Wenham after over two years battling Kidney Cancer. Born in Beverly, he was the son of the late Robert and Mary Caves. Richard is survived by his loving wife Karin (Carlson) Caves. Rick was raised in Wenham and attended the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District, graduating in 1968. In high school he ran Cross Country, was on the Golf and Wrestling teams, and was a member of the band. He went on to North Shore Community College and Boston State College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He earned his Master’s degree in Special Education from Leslie University. He always said he was an “ant,” working all the time and putting everything into the work he did. From age 14 he was shoveling snow and mowing lawns for neighbors and was a newspaper boy. He worked for Kavanagh and Clark, Lines by Hines, and was a Hamilton-Wenham Schools Custodian. He went on to have a 10-year career at Landmark High School in Prides Crossing, working as a tutor, History and LA teacher, Duty Master, and Director of Testing and Scheduling. He spent one year in Beijing, China tutoring a Landmark student whose father worked for the embassy. He was also a Special Education teacher at Essex Agricultural High School. In 1988 he left teaching and became a Postal Worker in South Hamilton, working as a clerk and then a carrier until 2018. He always enjoyed being able to drive around Hamilton and his hometown of Wenham. He was proud to say he was a true “Wenhamite.” He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 28 of Wenham and earned the rank of Life Scout. He was always a member of the High School Reunion Committee for the class of 1968. For many years he served as a member and chairman of the Wenham Cemetery Commission where he helped plan and open the Iron Rail Cemetery. Rick enjoyed cooking, reading, music, fantasy football, newspaper puzzles, and classic movies. He loved learning new things and information and was a trivia nut. He said he “knew everything about nothing,” and loved to call out answers when watching Jeopardy every night. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his three sons: Joshua Brown and his wife Emily of Danvers, Timothy Caves of Wenham, and John Caves also of Wenham; a brother, Robert Caves and his partner Shirley of Nottingham, NH; and five sisters: Maureen Soucy and her husband Greg of Lowell, Susan Daly and her husband Michael of Danvers, Margaret Kielty and her husband Randy of Wenham, Joanne Huffman and her husband Kevin of St. Louis, MO, and Patricia Janes and her husband Scott of Wenham; and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Home 525 Cabot Street, Beverly.
