Rev. Fred Ramsey Rakes, 85, of Bassett, VA passed away on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. He was born on April 10, 1935 to the late Clyde Thomas Rakes and Catherine Cannady Rakes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Prillaman Rakes; brothers, Norman Rakes and Bernard Rakes; and grandson, Bradley Rakes. Rev. Rakes was a retired church minister and had pastored for 26 years at numerous churches throughout Virginia. He was a member of Day Star Ministries in Bassett, VA. He loved God, family, music, and made numerous recordings and loved singing with his family, the Rakes Family Gospel Singers. He is survived by his three daughters, Deborah Rakes Turner of Bassett, VA, Betty Rakes Newman (Steve) of Martinsville, VA, and Carol Rakes Gillette (Gene) of Huddleston, VA; son, Freddy Dean Rakes (Donna) of Fork Mountain; two brothers, Ronnie Rakes (Barbara) of Patrick Springs, VA and Bobby Rakes (Carolyn) of Powhatan, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer Powell (Al), April Dalton (Teddy), Kelly Faille (Brian), Shannon Gillikin (Christian), and Tennille Fizzano (Matt); great-grandchildren, Kaylie Rakes, Chris Shay (Brittany), Kaitlyn Wood (Matt), Haley Bassett, Kalyn Faille, Kamryn Faille, Ashley Faille, Carlena Fizzano, and Bella Fizzano; great-great-grandchildren, Lillian Shay and Emma Grace Shay. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Due to COVID-19, all services will be private. The public is invited to pay respects on Friday, January 15, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, January 16, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville Chapel.
