Peter "Pistol Pete" J. MIller Obituary

Pete Miller, 59, of Fairfax, OH, died unexpectedly in his home on Sunday, January 10, 2021. Peter Jon Miller was born September 11, 1961, to Rev. Cecil F. and Janet R. Miller in Huron, SD. The family moved to Grand Forks and then Fargo in his elementary years and North Fargo became his true home. Pete was a Fargo North Spartan and was active in the arts—playing trumpet in the band and participating in musical theatre. He is remembered for his lead roles in Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, and Godspell. After graduation from Fargo North in 1979, Pete attended Dakota Wesleyan University for a year, and then North Dakota State University where he majored in Communications and was a proud member of the Goldstar Marching Band. He got his start in radio at KDSU spinning jazz. Pete celebrated his 40th anniversary as a radio personality in September 2020. His smooth and memorable baritone voice, wit, humor, and ability to talk about just about anything made him a favorite on-air companion to his loyal listeners. He started his career in Fargo, ND, and was heard on WDAY AM, Y-94, KFGO, Lite Rock 105, and K100, as well as KKDL/KDLM in Detroit Lakes, MN. He made his way to Rapid City, SD, where he was on Magic 93.9, moved to Denver, CO, and was on Big Dog 92.5 KZDG and Jones Satellite Radio, and eventually moved to the Cincinnati market, where he was a beloved radio personality. “Pistol Pete” was on B-105 (WUBE-FM) and 97.3 The Wolf (WYGY-FM) for over 20 years, where he earned a County Music Association award for his work, and just recently had moved to Classic Country WNKN and 106.7 WNKR. He married Mindy Grantham on September 11, 1993, in Fargo. They were married for 6 years and remained friends after their divorce. He loved NASCAR racing, was a huge NDSU Bison football fan, Cincinnati Bengals fan, a loyal University of Kentucky basketball fan and hater of all things Duke. He was a walking Almanac, filled with random facts to share on the radio and in conversation with his friends. Pete’s extended network of friends were like family. His yearly trips “home” to Fargo to visit his mother always involved time with “the fellas” at their favorite watering hole to catch up, laugh, and reminisce. Pete was an exceptional cook and loved to barbecue. He enjoyed his summer weekends at Lake Waynoka barbecuing for his friends, with a full pig roast at least once a summer. He will be missed by his friends at the Fairfax American Legion Post 554. He loved his family and is survived by his brother, Dr. David R. Miller (Regina, Saskatchewan), his brother-in-law Al Goehring (Wimbledon, ND), as well as his nieces and nephews; Jeremiah (Shaneal) Miller, Molly (Brian) Bestge, Katie (Kurtis) Karn, Andrew (Caitlin) Miller, Joe (Colleen) Miller, Josh Miller, Ash Miller, and Ariel Miller. He is also survived by his dear and longtime friend, Joey Hughes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Cecil and Rev. Janet Miller, his brother Marc Miller, brother and sister-in-law, Art and Deb Miller, and sister, Sue Goehring. A time of remembrance and sharing will be held during the summer of 2021 in Fargo, ND, with burial in Arthur, ND. A date and time is yet to be determined.
