Mrs. Jacqueline Etheridge Wilson, age 83 departed this life on Friday, January 8, 2021, at Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Wilmington, Delaware. Jacqueline is the daughter of the late Robert Bruce Etheridge and Bessie Lee Dixon. Mother of Margaret C. Holmes, John Hans Wilson III (Wife: Nanette Davis), Susan E. Childs (Husband: Oliver B. Childs), and Jacqueline M. Wilson Asheeke. Sister of the late Phyllis Etheridge Young and Marion Letitia Etheridge. Grandmother of Evette Pinder, Loryn C. Wilson-Carter (Husband: Neal Carter), Kia C. Johnson (Husband: Wayne M. Johnson), Toivo T. Asheeke, John H. Wilson IV, Douglas J. Lewis II (Partner: Samantha Clark), Mweneni E. Asheeke (Partner: Thibaut Barbey), Andre B. Childs Jr. (Partner: Hanna Bayless), Andrea N. Wilson, Martha N. Herman-Asheeke, and John W. Caraway. Great-grandmother of Raegan A. Clark, Cameron O. Johnson, Zoe M. Johnson, Andre B. Childs Jr., and Remy N. Lewis. She served as a charter Board member and officer of the first Black Catholic Secretariat in the Archdiocese of Washington (1973) and of the National Association of Black Catholic Administrators (1974-2002). She served from 1979-2002 as executive director of the Office of Black Catholics for the Archdiocese of Washington, DC. Mrs. Wilson has been an elementary school teacher (1966-1979), a tutor for a variety of schools, churches and organizations, parish council member and officer (1970-1975) and catechist (1973-1978), college instructor, founder, and co-founder of outreach programs & organizations in the Washington, DC Archdiocese, such as Black Catholic Revivals (1981-present), the Rejoice! Conference on Black Catholic Liturgy (1984-1990), and Sisters in the Spirit (2001-present). She has held several diocesan leadership positions; and had regional and national Catholic leadership positions with the National Black Catholic Congress and the African American Catholic Evangelizations Conference – and she continues to mentor leaders from all walks of life including her children and their children. Mrs. Wilson was appointed by Pope John Paul II as an observer and speaker at the Synod on Evangelization in the Americas in Rome, Italy in 1997, and joined other Black Catholic leaders to South Africa for an evangelism Conference with South African women. She has written and published many books, booklets, reviews, and news articles. A partial list includes these notable works: Combating Racism (1991); Charting New Paths: The History of the National Association of Black Catholic Administrators (2006), and Our Roots and Gifts, Proceedings of the Rejoice! Seminar in Rome, Italy (1989). She was also co-author with Loretta Butler, of O Write My Name: African American Catholics in the Archdiocese of Washington (2000). Mrs. Wilson received her BA degree in elementary education at Catholic University of America, and her master’s degree in administration and supervision form Howard University. She has traveled worldwide to these locations: Berlin, Germany, Rome, Italy, Paris, France, Mexico, and Canada. She has also travelled extensively in Africa to Namibia, South Africa, Ethiopia, and several countries in West Africa. Her best and most rewarding role however is being a parent, grandparent, great grandparent, and a willing, humble servant of God. Celebration of life services will be a Catholic Mass Celebration of Gratitude, Love and Joy in Washington DC at St. Augustine Catholic Church on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 10am EST. This service will be livestreamed: {Link to be Provided shortly}. There will be a Private Internment Service January 26,2021 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC.
