Ira R. Duer, 78 of Abilene passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 at Village Manor. He was born February 10, 1942 in Simpson County, Illinois, the son of Charles and Mary (Yocum) Duer. After graduating high school he joined the Air Force, serving in Vietnam. On March 5, 1969 he was united in marriage to Flora E. Hunt in Des Moines, Iowa. She preceded him in death October 19, 2019. Ira joined the Abilene Police Department in 1968 and served 36 years before retiring in 2004. He also farmed during those years. He enjoyed retirement spending time doing things he wanted to do such as going to auctions, attending High school ball games and spending time with his grandchildren. Ira is survived by his daughter, Theresa (John) Kready of Abilene. Two sons, Chad (Tricia) Duer of Abilene and John (Katie) Stuck of Mission, Kansas. Fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother, Jon (Gloria) Duer of Illinois and three sisters, Lois Kerr of Florida, Juanita Rohrer of California and Carol Twine of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Flora, son, David Duer, grandson, Carson Duer, brothers Harry, Charles and Max Duer. The family has chosen cremation. Celebration of life will be at 10:00 am, Saturday January 16, 2021 at the First Christian Church with Pastor Jason Kohler officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 pm until 7 pm at Danner Funeral Home. Family suggests that memorial be given to Hospice of Dickinson County.
