It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sumner Bowness on January 2, 2021.  Sumner was born December 1, 1925 on his parents’ homestead near Peers, AB where he remained for 95 fulfilling years.

He is survived by his daughter Darleen Burkinshaw and grandson Michael Burkinshaw (Kailee Mears); daughter-in-law Leslie Bowness, grandson Steven (Lindy) Beierle and great-grandchildren Remington and Carsten and grandson Kristopher Bowness (Katarina Duke); his sister Muriel and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. 

Sumner was predeceased by his beloved wife Hazel Bowness, his son Larry Bowness and his son-in-law Dan Burkinshaw; his parents Charles and Bernice Bowness; sisters Georgie and Jean, and brothers Horace and Bernard. 

Sumner farmed the original homestead while he also worked in lumber camps, on bridge construction and as a ferry operator, before going into business with his son in the oil patch, first with Boss Truck Service and then Cutbank Oil and Gas.  Retirement years were enjoyed on the land that he loved, with sightseeing trips in his (also loved) motorhome. 

Sumner laid down deep roots in the community and will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his family as well as many friends and neighbours.   Always easy going and generous with his time, he enjoyed nothing more than a coffee and a “good visit” or phone call with those who stayed in touch. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Fulham Community Centre on August 14, 2021 at 1:00 PM.
