Matthew R. VanZandt Hyde Park, New York Obituary

Matthew R. VanZandt

Matthew R. VanZandt, 50, a lifelong area resident, died on January 7, 2021, at Sharon Hospital, Sharon, Connecticut. He was affectionately known as “Matt” or “Mattie”. Born April 10, 1970 in Rhinebeck, he was the son of Peter E. and June E. Isaacson VanZandt. His parents survive in Hyde Park. One’s life can often be measured not so much by what they learned but by what they taught. Born developmentally disabled, Matt taught his family many life-lessons through his disability. He will be sorely missed by those who had the fortune of knowing him. Matt was fortunate enough to be born during the era of the beginning of some wonderful programs to support the developmentally disabled. Those programs include Rehabilitation Programs, Dutchess County BOCES, and the ARC Workshop. A resident of a Cardinal Hayes Group Home for almost forty years, the staff was like family for him. Mattie enjoyed horses, especially during therapy riding, and swimming. He loved to eat (especially pizza), listen to music, and go camping with his family. In addition to his parents, survivors include his brothers, Brent W. VanZandt and wife, Theresa, of Wappingers Falls, and Kory P. VanZandt and wife, Elizabeth, of Highland; nieces, Lindsey, Katlynn, Brooke, Kylie, Logan, and Reese. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Matt was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Alfred and Mary Isaacson; and paternal grandparents, Durwood and Dorothy VanZandt. Out of respect and concern for public safety, funeral services will be private. A celebration of Matt’s life will be held at a later date. The VanZandt family respectfully requests memorial donations to the Cardinal Hayes Home PO Box CH, St. Joseph Drive, Millbrook, NY 12545-0140. (www.cardinalhayeshome.org/donate) Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
