Herbert S. Goldberg passed away July 19, 2018 from complications of Alzheimers Disease. He was born July 23, 1926 in the Bronx, New York City, to Murray Goldberg and Bella Rubin, and later was the elder brother of Ruth. He graduated from St. John's University in New York on the GI bill. After that he received a MS degree from the University of Missouri, and then earned his PhD at The Ohio State University. Prior to attending university, Herb was a medic in the Navy stationed stateside. Herb married Helen Smilowitz in 1948. They had lived in the same neighborhood but met at Rockaway beach in Queen's; Helen's brother introduced them to each other. Herb and Helen moved to Columbia in 1953 with 6-week old Jaci. Herb started in the nascent Mizzou Department of Bacteriology at the School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 1953. Herb was appointed full professor by 1966, and recruited to the Dean's Office, also in 1966, where he filled various roles as Assistant then Associate Dean for 30 years, including leading research and academic affairs, as well as establishing the School of Allied Health where he was the founding Director, and leading the building of a new library of medicine. Herb was an expert on anaerobic gut flora, did foundational work on the microbiome, and sounded the alarm about the excessive use of antibiotics and anti-microbial resistance as early as the 1960's. His work took him around the world including a sabbatical at the University of Cambridge. An aficionado of jazz, Herb had enjoyed going to clubs in Harlem in his youth and as an adult stocked the house with records by Dinah Washington, Stan Getz (a schoolmate at Herman Ritter Junior High), Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Mahalia Jackson and more. An avid reader of history, Herb's library emphasized British and American history, as well as volumes on jazz, WW II, current affairs and Judaica. He was an engaged, affectionate and tender father and husband. Herb is survived by his daughters, Jaci Goldberg of Washington DC, Sheryl Goldberg of Champaign, Illinois, and Jeremy Spicehandler of New York, as well as a number of friends and extended family. He was pre-deceased by his wife and mother of his daughters Helen in 1993, sister Ruth in 2007, nephew Neal Spicehandler in 2002, nephew Elliott Spicehandler in 2014, and his parents. Services will be held at 1pm on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Congregation Beth Shalom, 500 W. Green Meadows Road, Columbia MO.
