Eugene "Gene" Thomas Herbert Obituary

Eugene Thomas Herbert (“Gene”) passed away in his sleep on February 28, 2020. He was 86. His wife of 63 years, Myra Ratti Herbert, followed him, after a long and brave struggle with breast cancer, on October 24, 2020. She was 87. They were married in Newton, NJ, on August 31, 1957. Gene graduated from Princeton University in 1955 and from the Harvard Law School in 1958. He served in the United States Navy’s Office of the Judge Advocate General until 1962. Myra graduated from Douglass College/Rutgers University in 1955 and received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1958. In 1962, after Gene was awarded a Ford Foundation grant to teach law at the University of Monrovia in Liberia, Africa, he and Myra moved to Liberia. After their years in Africa, Myra and Gene settled in Washington, D.C, where Gene worked at the Department of State and Myra worked as a psychiatric social worker at The Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. In 1968, Gene and Myra, and their daughter Stephanie, moved to London, England, where Gene served as counsel for a number of international companies throughout Europe and Myra worked at Cherry Tree — a psychiatric hospital for children. In 1978, the Herberts returned to Washington, D.C., where Gene continued his practice with a wide, and eclectic, range of clients. Gene represented Fortune 50 companies, foreign governments, celebrities, civil rights leaders, and friends who worked at the lunch counter and in the parking garage. He was counsel to Ted Kennedy’s 1980 presidential campaign and to Jesse Jackson’s 1984 presidential campaign. He was also a close friend and advisor to the late Dr. Ralph Abernathy. From 1988 to 1996, Gene served as the Ombudsman for the International Monetary Fund. Gene was a brilliant and unconventional lawyer, a loyal friend, and a loving and dedicated husband and father. He was appreciated by so many as a man of great empathy and kindness. He had an unmatched sense of humor and irony and, quite simply, was really great company. He was also an amazing Father and Grandfather who taught us all so much about history, life, and love. After returning to the United States, Myra worked, briefly, at The George Washington University Hospital, before taking a position as the Coordinator for Social Services for Fairfax County Public Schools — a job she held for 26 years. During her tenure, she instituted huge advancements in the provision of services for underserved families and children, increased the role of social workers and psychologists in the school communities, and created a teen suicide prevention program that has been recognized as a model for schools, nationally and internationally. Myra was dedicated to the people she served and to her involved and hard-working staff. She formed life-long friendships with the people with whom she worked, but her true calling and commitment was to making people’s, especially children’s, lives better. She was an inspiration to many and she made positive and lasting changes. She was a loving, generous, and involved Mother and Grandmother whose presence is sorely missed. Myra and Gene leave behind a legacy of love, of learning, and of hope for a better future. They are missed by their daughter, Stephanie, and their three grandchildren, Christopher, Faith, and Veronica. They will be interred together at Arlington National Cemetery on January 6th, 2021, at 3:00 p.m. All are welcome. Please arrive by 2:15 p.m. with a government-issued ID and a mask.
