William "Bill" Champlin Hertzog Edmonds, Washington Obituary

William "Bill" Champlin Hertzog

William (Bill) passed away peacefully on December 7, 2020 at the age of 95. He was born on September 1, 1925 in Reading, PA, to Julia and Jacob Hertzog. He was the beloved husband of Verletta Hertzog, who died in 2017. Bill served in the United States Air Force during World War II and married Verletta in 1948. Bill and Verletta spent most of their married lives in Pittsburgh. They were active members of Stewart Avenue and Zion Lutheran churches. During their 69-year marriage, they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and parts of Europe. They loved entertaining friends and family and served as impromptu tour guides to any and all who visited them. Bill enjoyed bowling, tennis, and watching the Steelers and the Pirates; but most of all he loved taking care of his family and home. He was an amateur craftsman, proudly refurbishing early-American furniture and a player piano; building clocks, an elaborate doll house, and a unique cradle. In his retirement years, Bill coordinated the Meals on Wheels program for his area. Following Verletta’s passing, Bill moved to Seattle to be cared for and near his son and daughter-in-law. He is survived by his daughters Leslie Hertzog (Paul Carrellas), and Julie Ries, and son, David Hertzog (Nancy); he was the grandfather to Nicholas Ries (Tonya), Elaina Busold (Andy), Jacob Hertzog (Erica Duncan), and Brian Hertzog (fiancé Diana Smith); and great grandfather to Abi and Vincent Ries. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Tim Ries, his sister Dorothy Kempton, her husband Royce, his brother Jacob Hertzog, and Faye his sister-in-law. Bill spent his last two years at Ideal Senior Care in Edmonds, WA. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Michelle and Mario for their loving and compassionate care. He was a truly kind and generous man who will be missed by all who knew him. Bill and Verletta will be interned together at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in Pittsburgh. A memorial service will be held in late 2021, once travel restrictions are eased. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local food bank to help others through difficult times.
