Carolyn Jennings Scott Obituary

Tuesday, December 1, 2020, marked the day that Carolyn Jennings Scott, 89, walked into the welcoming arms of her precious Savior and loving family. She passed into eternity as the musical strains of “Come home, come home it’s suppertime” played softly in her ear. Carolyn was predeceased by her beloved husband of 60 years, Thomas Eugene “Gene” Scott Sr. Born on October 20, 1931, in Greenwood, SC, she was the youngest child of James Beauregard Jennings, Jr., and Ida Pearl Bodie Jennings. She was predeceased by her siblings: Jim (“Bo”) Jennings, Carl Jennings, Arline Wilkie, Marybelle Roper, and her beloved identical twin sister, Catherine West. Carolyn, or “Gram” as she was known to her family and many outside of the family, is survived by three children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren: daughter Judy and son-in-law Frank DeFore of Jonesville, VA; son Thomas E. "Tommy" Scott, Jr. and daughter-in-law Jan, of Gilbert, SC; daughter Jeanie and son-in-law Tim Fisk of Chatham, VA. Grandchildren include Katie DeFore (Kal Khasawneh), of Little Rock, AK; Kory DeFore (Terah) of Navarre, FL; Tara Scott Morgan (Mike) and Brad Scott (Amanda) of West Columbia, SC; Sarah George of Los Angeles, CA; Rachel Crews (Steven) of Chatham, VA, and James Fisk (Annika) of Lynchburg, VA. Great-grandchildren include Rami and Julia Khasawneh, John and Anna DeFore, Aria Scott, and Ivey Crews. As the COVID pandemic progressed, Gram especially cherished chatty visits with her great-grandchild Julia via her Amazon Echo Show. Carolyn worked in the school cafeteria for decades. Children would line up in HER line, because when cookies were “accidentally” broken, they would get “more”. Long before subsidized lunches were instituted, hungry children knew to come through her line for MORE. Hospitality was her greatest gift, and feeding hungry crowds was her greatest joy. Carolyn also deeply felt the calling of her “home mission”: seeking out elderly people in need wherever she lived, helping to shampoo and style hair, buy groceries, take birthday presents, and Christmas presents. Even when her own body was frail and wheelchair bound, she ministered: praying over a staff member whose back was hurting (“You know”, the nurse later said with wonder, “My back stopped hurting!”), fussing over the daughter of an elderly neighbor who confessed to not having eaten that day, and helping calm a wandering confused Alzheimer’s patient. Because of the COVID pandemic, no public service will be held at this time. Having lost their beloved Gram to this virus, the family does not wish to risk even one single exposure. A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Those wishing to donate in Carolyn’s memory are encouraged with two choices: Central Church of the Nazarene, 100 S. Woodside Pkwy, West Columbia, SC 29169; Bethany United Methodist Church, c/o Bruce Rowland, 2575 Iveytown Rd., Lincolnton, GA 30817. And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’ And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” ~Rev. 19:19 It’s suppertime. “Well done, good and faithful servant…come and share your Master’s happiness.” ~Matthew 25:2
