Lucy Whitehead Obituary

Longtime Alaska resident Lucy Whitehead, 96, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2020, at the Anchorage Pioneer's Home. Lucy was born in Anchorage on December 19, 1923, to Mary and Casey McDannel. She lived most of her life in the place she loved, Alaska, and started work at age sixteen with the Army Corp of Engineers on Fort Richardson. Lucy met her future husband, Gilbert Whitehead (Gib), at a Rainbow Girl's Dance in Anchorage, and they married a year later on June 25, 1941. Gilbert and Lucy had a wonderful life together with their family, friends, and dogs. Lucy later took a job with the Alaska Railroad, where she eventually retired. She was incredibly knowledgeable about Alaskan history and art. Lucy loved sharing incredible stories of Alaska's pioneers and the 1964 Good Friday earthquake that devastated Anchorage and surrounding areas. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Mother’s Club and the Pioneers of Alaska where she participated in many charitable events and strove to better her community. Lucy is preceded in death by her husband Gib, her twin sisters Helen and Mary, and her brother Casey. She is survived by many family and friends who loved her and knew her good heart.
