Herbert C. Kahrer Obituary

Herbert C. Kahrer, 85, formerly of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of December 2, 2020 at Southwestern Veterans’ Center in Pittsburgh. Born February 13, 1935 in New Castle, he was the son of William and Mary G. (McGivern) Kahrer. Mr. Kahrer was preceded in death on March 4, 2010 by his first wife, Loretta M. (McCaskey) Kahrer, whom he married October 4, 1966. He subsequently married Connie Gene Cirincione on October 11, 2014. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2017. Herbert served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1969, retiring as a staff sergeant. During that time, he served 3 tours in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart Medal with 1 gold star for wounds received in action in 1968. Among his other medals, he received the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal for service in Cuba, the Korean Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Lebanon and the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 silver and 2 bronze stars. He was employed with Rockwell Axle division as a machine operator until his retirement in 1992. He also served as a former police officer for Scott and Hickory Townships. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Marine Corps Association, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Member at Large. As a disabled Rifle Co. Gunnery Sergeant, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and Castlewood Rod and Gun. Herbert was active with several clubs and lodges such as the Moose Lodge, Polish Falcons, Eagles Club and Tow Jagielly Society. Herbert enjoyed attending events where he could dance and occasionally drink Wild Turkey on special occasions. With no family left, he cherished his dear friends, Sandy and Randy Bara, Sarah and Butch Gray and Karen and Jerry Kern who are all of New Castle. He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and three brothers, Raymond, William and Fred Kahrer. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 8, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road. Visitors are asked to adhere to guidelines regarding wearing face masks and practicing social distancing. A funeral service will take place immediately following visitation at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Merv Knieriem, seminarian, officiating.
