Saundra F. Weaver Obituary

Saundra F. Weaver of Union NJ, age 81 transitioned to be with the Lord on November 25th, 2020 after suffering a short illness due to an injury. Saundra (Sandy) was born on November 23rd, 1939 in Newark NJ to the late Lena Cohen Parker and Harold Parker and raised along with her late sister Lois Smith.

Saundra, “Sandy” as she was called by friends was educated in the Newark Public School system and graduated from Central High School. On May 3rd, 1963 she married the love of her life and childhood friend Westley B. Weaver and had 2 daughters, Lynn and Kim.

From the early 70’s to the late 90’s Sandy and Wes were the proprietors of several jazz & supper clubs in downtown Newark and Elizabeth NJ. The most famous of which was Mr Wes’s Lounge, one of the few Black owned and operated entertainment venues that featured topflight talent and specialized in Southern Cuisine. After the passing of her husband, Sandy and her daughter Lynn opened up Mr. Wes’s Deli in South Orange NJ.

Sandy was a dedicated mother first and foremost - one who treasured her children and cherished every moment with them. As the grandkids came, nothing made her happier than her role as “Nana” and “Grand Naunny”. Anyone who crossed Sandy’s path was made to feel like family and she lived her life being kind and helpful to others, especially her many friends at Ehrhart Gardens.

She leaves to cherish her memory; Daughters: Lynn Weaver Howard and Kim Waddy. Son in Laws: Brad Howard and Gene Waddy I. Grandchildren: Lena, Frank Westley and Braylin Howard; Ashley and Gene Waddy II. God Children: Louis Mercer Jr., Kamar Clifton and Tanya Clifton White.  Cousins: Beverly McKenzie, Tiffany Payne Dodd and Pamela Poussant. Lifelong Friends: Romaine Burnett, Louis and Carol Mercer, Reuben Johnson, Gerald Owens and Phylis Inman. Adopted Daughters: Sharon McGahee, Audrey Davidson Cunningham, Beryl West, Lydia Hall, Benita Hill, and the “infamous” Mr. Wes’s Ladies as well as a host of family and friends.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private “invitation only” viewing and funeral service will be held. In addition, a public live stream will be made available at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 5th with a public viewing from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm to follow at Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave, Westfield, NJ 07090 (908) 789-7400 www.higginsandbonner.com
